Hair Removal - Laser Hair Removal

In a culture obsessed with cleanliness, shaving and hair removal is a big business, both for men and women. Men tend to have an easier job, as facial hair, stubble and 5 oclock shadow is more or less accepted as part of a masculine look and relatively easy to combat with daily shaving. For women though, some prickly stubble on the legs isn't all that appealing, so shaving or hair removal via other methods is an ongoing battle for most women. Of course the most traditional method of hair removal is by shaving with a razor. There are a lot of women-oriented shavers available, now with multiple blades and special contoured designs.

Hair Removal Methods

But that still leaves women with a daily task of shaving their legs, and legs have a lot more surface area than a man's face! So what other hair removal options are there? There are both temporary and permanent methods. Temporary hair removal methods include: electronic trimmers and shavers, depilatory creams, tweezing, waxing, rotary epilators. And there are permanent hair removal methods, like: electrolysis and laser hair removal. Each method of hair removal has its good and bad points, including cost, time between procedures, and amount of time involved.

Permanent Hair Removal - Laser Hair Removal

Permanent hair removal means what it says - hair is removed and does not grow back. Unfortunately, this is not easy to do. The old fashioned method of permanent hair removal is electrolysis. Electrolysis involves inserting a tiny metal probe into each follicle, one by one, and zapping the follicle with electricity. This is a slow, expensive, and painful procedure, and not very useful except for very small areas, like around the face or eyebrows. Laser Hair removal has become the lastest fad, with ads promising quick and painless permanent removal of hair. It is not quite that easy. During laser hair removal treatment, small areas on the face or body are zapped with a special laser by a technician. Special wavelengths of light target the pigment of the hair and destroy it. Often a light topical anesthetic is used to numb the skin, otherwise there is an unpleasant snapping sensation each time the laser is used which can be painful. Laser hair removal always requires multiple treatments, and often follow-up treatments as well, since only hairs in specific portions of the growth phase are affected at any given time, meaning the first laser treatment might destroy 15% of the hairs, with 6 or more treatments being needed to get all the hairs. After a treatment, the skin is often red and may appear irritated for a day or more.

Laser hair removal is still a relatively new procedure, so claims to "permanent hair removal" may be misleading. Many times hair continues to grow back, although lighter and thinner, but this still requires additional follow-ups to remove. How much does laser hair removal cost? This can be an expensive process as well, costing $50-$100 per visit. Laser hair removal is also most effective for small body areas, like the chin, upper lip, or eyebrows. It can be done on legs as well, and some men have their backs or necks done, but again it can be a long slow process. Other Hair Removal Methods

Tweezing is one of the more common at-home techniques used for hair removal. By its nature, tweezing is best used on stray hairs on small areas of the body - usually the face or eyebrows. It can be painful and can cause ingrown hairs, but most women swear by it. Waxing involves placing hot wax on the skin, allowing it to cool and adhere to hairs, and then quickly pulling it (and the hairs) off. This is similar to tweezing 100 hairs or more at once, so yes, it does hurt and leaves the skin red temporarily. It can be done at home and gives longer lasting results than shaving. Professional waxing is also an option for legs, bikini area, face, and the famous Brazilian wax, and can cost from $20-$200, depending on how big the area being done is. Hair removal scams

Just like all the scams to grow hair for bald men, there are scams to remove hair for women. Electric tweezers and special creams probably won't work. Use your common sense - if you find something that sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
