Low Fat Recipes

America has a problem with obesity - too many people eat too much food, too large of portion, too many calories. We don't get enough fiber. We don't get enough fruits and vegatables, and we eat way too much processed sugar in soda, sweets, juices, and many other foods. Losing weight and staying health requires some work and effort on your part, but the first steps are a healthy diet and increasing your exercise level. In this article we will look into some low fat diets and low fat recipe ideas that you can use to lose weight and live healthier. From websites to books, there are resources out there to help you find the skinnier, healthier you, or maintain your healthy self.

If you are wondering how healthy you are to start with, you can check out your BMI (body mass index) at the Baylor College of Medicine (http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/caloriesneed.htm) - it will tell you what your required caloric daily intake is to maintain your current size and weight. This is a starting point when you consider your diet and what your calorie reduction goal is. A low-fat diet can help you cut calories that your body doesn't need, letting you lose weight. As a general rule, no more than 25-30% of your caloric intake should come from fats, especially saturated fats.

Some Tips for Low Fat Diet

There are some basic tips you can follow to start cutting fat from your diet immediately. For starters, be sure to trim visible fat off the meat you cook. And bake or broil rather than frying food in oil. When it comes to salads and potatoes and pasta, go light on the toppings and dressings which are often loaded with fat -- if you're like most people, you'll find most low-fat or non-fat dressings to taste almost exactly the same as their regular counterparts. When it comes to milk products, go with fat-free cheeses and skim milk. Stay away from whole milk, cream, sour cream, and cheese spreads - these are loaded with fat calories. Stay away from fried breaded products like french toast, doughnuts, potato chips, etc. For meats, skinless chicken is a winner, as is veal, ham, and fish. When it comes to desserts, avoid things like ice cream, cakes, cookies, and go with sherbets, fruit ice, or even hard candy or jelly beans, which have a few calories but no fat.
