Lasik Eye Repair Surgery in Manhattan - New York Eye Surgeon

Over the last 10 years, Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) eye surgery has become one of the most popular elective surgeries to have performed in this country. LASIK surgery causes very little pain or discomfort, both during and after the procedure, and it is performed in a standard doctor's office on an outpatient basis. In fact, it usually takes only about 15 minutes to perform. After the surgery, patients normally regain improved vision within just 24-48 hours. The procedure itself involves simple eye drop anesthesia, after which a thin flap of skin is opened on the surface of the eye, allowing the laser to cut and shape the cornea below to perfect it's light-focussing properties. LASIK surgery has been successfully performed on tens of millions of patients, making it very safe overall. The trick is still finding a well qualified LASIK surgeon whom you can trust with your eyesight.

New York LASIK Doctors

In New York, you must have 20/40 vision to drive, so many people opt for laser eye surgery to pass their eye exams at the DMV. Finding a good LASIK surgeon in New York is pretty easy. New York is home to some of the most well-trained and experienced doctors in the world, and in the field of eye surgery, it is no different. The main thing to consider is the experience of the surgeon - how many LASIK surgeries have they performed? how long have they been doing this? is LASIK surgery their only business, or just sideline to their practice? Price should also be a consideration, but since we are talking about your vision here, it should certainly be secondary to the doctor selection. How much does LASIK surgery in New York cost? You will see advertisements as low as $399 per eye (LASIK prices are normally quoted per eye - if you see "$999 LASIK surgery", this means $2000 total). But we recommend being careful before choosing a doctor who chooses to promote his practice strictly on price. True, even at $400 for a 15 minute procedure, that doctor could make pretty good money, but you don't want him learning on the job on your eyes -- so we would go with experience over price any day. Prices have come down over time, but many of the top LASIK doctors in expensive metro locations still charge $1000+ per eye. Keep in mind many doctors also promote a bargain basic LASIK price, whereas most customers now want more expensive Intralase bladeless procedures, which can cost substantially more. In general, expect to pay between $800-$1500 per eye for LASIK and PRK surgery, and $2000-$3000 per eye for Intralase bladeless procedures.

Many doctors also offer monthly payment plans for LASIK eye surgery to help reduce the financial burden, since vision correction surgery is considered elective and is not covered by most insurance plans. Most doctors offer free consultation wherein they will go over whether or not you are a good candidate for the surgery, what to expect before, during, and after, how much it will cost, etc. Take advantage of this, and do not hesitate to visit with 3 or 4 doctor before deciding on which one to use.

Best New York LASIK Doctors and Eye Surgeons

There are hundreds of eye doctors performing LASIK surgery in the greater New York Area, but some have much more experience and credentials than others. A good starting place is to get advice from friends, co-worker, or family that have had LASIK done - find out which doctor they used, what they liked or didn't like about them, how happy they are with their vision results, and whether they would recommend them. Then meet with a few of those doctors and see who you feel the most comfortable with. Some of the other best New York LASIK doctors include:

Dr. Ken Moadel at the New York Eye Specialist, located at 317 Madison Ave, Suite 1215 (42nd and Madison, NY2020.com, 212-490-EYES) in Manhattan (also in Stamford, CT). Dr. Moadel has performed almost 40,000 laser and LASIK procedures, ranking him among the top 100 most experienced eye surgeons. He has been performing only corrective eye surgeries since 1995 - that's all he does (how else do you get up to 40,000?!). Many local celebrities endorse him, as do all his patients you talk to. He is not the cheapest, but certainly one of the best. Check out the LASIK handbook offered on his site to learn more about the procedure.

The Diamond Vision Laser Center of Manhattan at 345 East 37th Street (corner of First Avenue) Suite 301 (800-984-2020, Diamondvision.com). Diamond Vision also has office in NJ and Connecticut. They have the largest LASIK practice in the Northeast and the New York area. Started by Dr. Vadim Filatov in Manhattan in 1999, the practice is currently staffed by Dr. Steven W. Stetson, Dr. Seth Biser, and Dr. Emerson T. Que. They offer both Intralase bladeless and CustomVue procedures in addition to standard LASIK surgery. Up to 97% of IntraLASIK patients attain 20/20 vision, making it a preferred, more expensive treatment option.

Finally, consider Manhattan Lasik Center, located at 110 East 55th Street (between Lexington & Park Avenue) in midtown Manhattan (212-759-9617, ManhattanLasikCenter.com). Their doctors, Dr. Kevin K. Niksarli and Dr. Mark Buchsbaum have performed more than 30,000 laser eye surgeries over the last 10 years, earning a strong reputation among New Yorkers. They also offer all the most advanced laser surgery techniques, including Visx Star S4 CustomVue, Intralase and Nidek. Again, all they do is laser eye surgery - that is their specialty. CustomVue is also known as Custom LASIK, which provide detailed maps of the individuals eyes, allowing for much greater accuracy in treatment and vision improvement. It costs more, but for many, the resulting near perfect vision after years or decades of glasses and contacts is worth the price.
