The HF3480 can be set up to 300 lux (lux is the measurement of illumination), which allows you to customize your wake time. Higher intensity means a quicker wake time, so you can adjust it as needed. The Philips energy saving lamp consumes up to 24 percent less energy compared to a normal light bulb; Philip's light is the only one to use an energy efficient, long-life bulb like this. Upon waking, you can have your choice of four peaceful and pleasant wake-up sounds, like chirping birds. The sound increases gradually as well so there is nothing jarring or unpleasant. Philips Wake-Up Light HF3490 - This Philips Wake-Up Light provides all the same pleasant waking experiences as the HF3480, but it adds extra convenience for iPod and iPhone users. You can dock your iPod or iPhone in the Wake-Up lamp and listen to tunes on the integrated sound box. Switch to the radio or natural wake-up sounds for a change of pace. You can choose your favorite song as your wake-up song, as well as the time you need to get up. Your song starts playing gently at first, and then with increasing volume over 90 seconds to the volume level you have set. This way, you are ushered into the waking world, not thrown. Best of all, you can listen to your music from your Apple device, and it charges. When you're ready to go, so is your iPod. If there is anything that will make you feel better in the midst of seasonal depression, it's sun and music. And the great part of the Wake-Up lamps is that they are perfect any time of year. The HF3490 is $180. One issue that many Amazon reviewers have with the Philips Wake-Up Light is that lamp. Both the HF3480 and HF3490 use Philips energy saving lamp. While it does provide great energy savings and life, it cannot be replaced. According to Philips, their lamps will last about 7 years, and they say it is unlikely you will need to change it over the life of your lamp. So in all likelihood, this is not going to be something you'll pass down to your great-grandchildren, but it will provide you with seven years of exceptional mornings. Elsewhere on the web, the Wake-Up Light reviews very well; DigitalTrends, for instance, likes the design, the fabulous light features, the quality of the alarm, and the iPod/iPhone docking.
