Philips Wake-Up Light Review:Winter can be a long hard season for many people, and it's not necessarily the cold or the snow or the endless shoveling. Most of the time, it is the lack of good old Vitamin D. This vitamin is produced after you are exposed to ultraviolet B light, and it is also present in a few different foods, notably milk. The problem for people who live in areas with long winters is that they don't get enough exposure to the sun. You may get up to go to work in the dark, stay in your artificially lighted and warm office, and then drive home in the dark. It's no wonder that people want to crawl into a cave until spring. For some people, though, winter and the lack of sun causes a form of depression called seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. While it's more complicated than this, we're not getting enough vitamin D and sunlight. Philip's Wake-Up Light is designed to change this. SAD doesn't have to get you down for a whole season; you can take steps to get yourself feeling a bit more sunny.
What is the Philips Wake-Up Light? - There are few things more discouraging and disheartening than hearing your alarm clock going off and looking out the window to find it pitch black. It's just hard to get up. A blaring alarm is not the most pleasant way to wake up in the best of circumstances, and it is a hard way to start the day for people who are affected by seasonal affective disorder. Getting off to the right start is essential, so Philips has combined their simulated sunlight with an alarm to help you wake naturally and positively. Let's see how it works. The Wake-Up Light isn't a seasonal depression lamp, per se, but there's no reason why you can't get the same types of benefits. If you want to increase your energy, Philips makes an energy light that you may find fits your needs better. The Wake-Up Light helps you wake up feeling better, feeling more peace of mind, and feeling refreshed. All of this can make symptoms of SAD much better, if not alleviate them completely. The Wake-Up Light simulates natural sunlight, which has been clinically proven to improve your sense of well-being. You set the Wake-Up Light before you go to bed, and a half hour before your wake time, the light starts to fill your room, imitating real sunlight's gradual rise. Why bother with this if you're going to be asleep? We're creatures of nature and we all have a circadian rhythm; that is, we have a natural wake/sleep cycle, and it's naturally based on the sun's movements. As the sun begins to rise, so do our bodies as the light activates energy hormones. At your selected wake time, the light is at its strongest level (which you can adjust according to your preferences), and you wake naturally because your body is ready, not because an alarm is screaming at you. Phillips has two different Wake-Up Light models available for sale in the United States: the HF3480 and the HF3490. What's the difference, and which do you want to wake up with?
Best Wake Up Lamp:Philips HF3480 Wake-up Light - Gradual wakening is healthy, and this Philips light allows you to do it according to your sensitivity and preferences. The HF3480 can be set up to 300 lux (lux is the measurement of illumination), which allows you to customize your wake time. Higher intensity means a quicker wake time, so you can adjust it as needed. The Philips energy saving lamp consumes up to 24 percent less energy compared to a normal light bulb; Philip's light is the only one to use an energy efficient, long-life bulb like this. Upon waking, you can have your choice of four peaceful and pleasant wake-up sounds, like chirping birds. The sound increases gradually as well so there is nothing jarring or unpleasant. You can also choose to wake up to your favorite FM radio station. The Philip's Wake-Up Light is a great companion in the morning, but it is also a great way to say good night. The dusk simulator gradually dims the light and sound to help you fall asleep naturally. Now if only the middle of your day could be as calm and pleasant! This Wake-Up lamp lists for $170, but you can find it on Amazon for a more about $100.
Philips Wake-Up Light HF3490 - This Philips Wake-Up Light provides all the same pleasant waking experiences as the HF3480, but it adds extra convenience for iPod and iPhone users. You can dock your iPod or iPhone in the Wake-Up lamp and listen to tunes on the integrated sound box. Switch to the radio or natural wake-up sounds for a change of pace. You can choose your favorite song as your wake-up song, as well as the time you need to get up. Your song starts playing gently at first, and then with increasing volume over 90 seconds to the volume level you have set. This way, you are ushered into the waking world, not thrown. Best of all, you can listen to your music from your Apple device, and it charges. When you're ready to go, so is your iPod. If there is anything that will make you feel better in the midst of seasonal depression, it's sun and music. And the great part of the Wake-Up lamps is that they are perfect any time of year. The HF3490 is $180. One issue that many Amazon reviewers have with the Philips Wake-Up Light is that lamp. Both the HF3480 and HF3490 use Philips energy saving lamp. While it does provide great energy savings and life, it cannot be replaced. According to Philips, their lamps will last about 7 years, and they say it is unlikely you will need to change it over the life of your lamp. So in all likelihood, this is not going to be something you'll pass down to your great-grandchildren, but it will provide you with seven years of exceptional mornings. Elsewhere on the web, the Wake-Up Light reviews very well; DigitalTrends, for instance, likes the design, the fabulous light features, the quality of the alarm, and the iPod/iPhone docking. Overall, consumers and experts alike say that this is a far more pleasant way to greet the day. Try the Philips Wake-Up Lamp and we think you'll agree.
