Getting a Wart Removed:

Let's start by getting a better understanding of what a wart actually is. Common warts, often found on hands and feet, are a virus which is referred to as HPV (human papilloma virus). Many warts that you find on your fingers/hands/feet are possible to remove without making a doctors visit. Genital warts and plantar warts are best left to doctors and we are not going to cover those variety in this article. I had a wart right on my thumb when I was about 12 years old. I was a constant nail biter and doctors say this is a fairly common way to get warts. Warts can spread from people to people and even from one area of your body to another. Therefore, it is pertinent that you treat and get rid of warts as fast as possible. My 5 year old son recently had a wart on his toe and we tried home remedies before seeing a doctor. One of my neighbors is a nurse so we asked her opinion on how to handle it.

One of the first remedies you will find when searching online for "wart removal" is the famous duct tape method. The theory goes that if you put duct tape over the wart for an extended period of time (removing the tape every few days and replacing it), the tape will slowly kill the wart and each time you remove the tape a small layer of the wart will also come off. At the end of a month or more, the idea is that the wart will be gone altogether. There are countless stories online where this does work, so if you have the patience, it's worth a try. It didn't work for us, plus I didn't want to wait 6 weeks to find out that the darn thing had spread. There are over the counter treatments you can try including gels, creams, liquids and freezing solutions like those from Dr. Scholl's. Wart removal can be pretty much painless, but again the process takes time and not everyone has the patience to stick it out. My wart was eventually burned off in a doctors office as it would never go away. It was painful only because my doctor had to shoot novocaine into my thumb so that it was numb enough to then burn it out. Most doctors these days just use liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart. When the wart turns white it's a sign that cells within it are dying. The doctor did this twice to my sons wart (all within a few minutes). There is still no guarantee that the wart will die, but there is a good chance we are done with it. Over the next 4 to 6 weeks the wart should eventually blister up and fall off. New skin will replace where it was. The procedure did hurt a bit, as the liquid nitrogen is very cold and it can be uncomfortable for a few seconds. My son handled it just fine and we will now watch the wart to see what happens.

Wart Removal - At Home Solutions:

If you are not the type that goes to the doctor for small things like warts, then there is still another option in terms of getting rid of it (or them). Many over the counter drugs or treatments are available online or in your local pharmacy or drugstore. We could find no quick solution to having warts, so expect the process to take at least 4 weeks and some products mention up to 10 weeks. Most warts are not intrusive, so stick to the program and eventually it will go away. How much are these products? Most range from $5 up to $40. Some of the more popular choices are Compound W Freeze, Dermatend, Wart DX, Dr. Scholl's Clear Away Wart Remover Medicated Disks, Duofilm Liquid Salicylic Acid Wart Remover and Dr. Scholl's Freeze Away Wart Remover. You can browse the best selling wart removal products here. We suggest shopping on Amazon.com since they have dozens of owner reviews for almost every product and you can then read what others have to say before buying anything. It's always a good idea to read at least 2 or 3 comments and opinions before buying anything online.

How Much Does it Cost to Have a Wart Removed:

If you are finding no results at home with trying to get rid of a wart, then go to a doctor. Our co-pay was roughly $20 and that should do it. Even if you have zero health insurance coverage, it still might be about $80 to go to a clinic or a basic doctor visit to have it removed. Warts can spread, so waiting too long may make it worse. Sometimes they go away on their own, but that could take 6 months (in some cases). The home remedies are an inexpensive way to try, but if they fail, go with the higher % choice and let a doctor handle it. The visit is quick, pain free, and simple. I have had moles and warts removed from doctors and I was always relieved afterwards to know that the problem was gone.
