You may know them by the name stacking chairs, but they are also called catering chairs, banquet chairs, or office chairs. We see them all the time in churches, at parties, events, meeting rooms at hotels, and at businesses. The stacking chair is a necessity for most companies that require extra seating periodically. Caterers use them all the time at weddings as they are easy to setup and put away. Plastic stacking chairs are probably the most popular of the bunch and can be found at stores like Walmart, Target, Office Depot and Staples. I recently helped our local school purchase new stacking chairs for things like concerts and events that are held in our gymnasium where 100's of parents and students show up at once. I first looked on Craigslist to find some decent used ones, but the pickings were slim and so we decided on buying new.
Choosing Stacking Chairs - The basic stacking chairs made of plastic are cheap and cost no more than $15/each - often discounted when you purchase in bulk. I figured Costco might be the place to search but found that they carry nicer chairs that stack and cost $50/each. Target was not much better with sets of 2 selling for $70. At Walmart, I found stackable chairs that were about $35/each but still not as cheap as we needed. Stackable office chairs shouldn't be that expensive I thought. Unfortunately it appeared that most stores carried the heavier duty banquet chairs that stack - with padded seats and sturdy frames. We just wanted the basic plastic chairs. The more searching I did online I saw that he word "churches" came up quite often when looking for chairs. Stacking chairs for churches is a popular search topic and so I went with it. To my surprise I found quite a few websites that offer banquet stack chairs (similar to what we wanted) for roughly $15/each. In many cases if you bought 50+ chairs they also included a free dolly. Stackchairs4less.com was the ideal website for us and they even have a section on school stack chairs. You can go with real basic up to nicer padded chairs that are meant for more formal gatherings. There are stacking chairs with arms but for our needs, those were not necessary. Another excellent source was online at Amazon.com where they have over 1000 listings for stacking chairs. Read reviews, see photos, get descriptions and price compare within seconds. RECOMMENDED - We suggest shopping online at Amazon for all the reasons we just mentioned. Best Stacking Chairs:
BEST - Looking for a good quality chair, consider the Augusta Stackable Chair Black Frame With Burgundy Vinyl which sells for $140 (set of 4). Although expensive, they offer 1 1/2" foam cushioning on the seat and the back is padded too. The rugged vinyl upholstery will hold up through many a party or event and they hold up to 250 pounds. The chairs can be used either indoors or outdoors. Perfect for conventions, school events, and office environments. Stacking chairs for your house can be simpler and less padded. The Modern Stacking Chairs (2 pack) sell for about $70 on Amazon and in stores like Target. They come in a variety of colors and make great additions to kitchen or dining tables. Bring them out for parties or neighborhood get-togethers and then stack them up for easy storage. See top rated stacking chairs here.
Stacking Chairs with Arms:
The majority of stacking chairs don't have arms and those that do tend to be more expensive. We found several stacking chairs with arms on Amazon.com although quite a few don't have very high backs. For some reason, arms equates to lower backs on the chairs. The CommClad was one that caught our eye as well as the Virco Comfort Stacker. Ultimately you want a chair that is easy to store (that's why you are buying stackables), but it should also be somewhat comfortable for someone to sit in for an hour. The hard plastic seats are less favorable compared to the padded seats, but if you are on a budget perhaps forego the cushioning and stick with the basics. Get out to the office supply stores in your region and sit in a few of these chairs to see how they feel. Use the Internet to comparison shop on price.
