Another great space!
The closet should always be organized. You might have a walk in, 2 walk ins, sliding door closet in your room, etc..
Mine is a walk in my bathroom. I used to not like closets in the bathroom, but now I really love it that way.
Whatever you have, keep it tidy! This is one of the easiest things to organize and keep clean, think how small it is overall!
Hangers-make them all the same! I like firm white plastic hangers, I also love wood.
But do NOT mix and match, ie dry cleaning hangers, which are the worst!, with some wood ones and then a few colored ones here and there. Egad, I myself just realized a couple of years ago how I was keeping the mismatch of hangers-now I cannot believe I was-I just missed it somehow!
Arranging Clothes In The Closet
There are so many ways to do it-by color, by season. by styles…
But do something. Clothes just shoved in here and there with no order is awful
I keep mine by style-tank tops, jeans, pants, skirt suits, dresses, coats, sweaters-pull over and button up, nice tops, t shirts, long sleeve tops, skirts, formal dresses.
I do NOT store things for winter or summer-I like to keep everything out. These days it is not uncommon to wear a cute tank over a long sleeve top anyhow.
Hang all the hangers going the same way-that is a huge pet peeve for me!
Go through your clothes every six months. We all know the rules, if you are not wearing it, like for at least one year, get rid of it. That does not pertain to special clothes, but be sure to reevaluate-if you wore something 5 years ago and loved it. Is it in style, would you really wear it again??
Try things on-something you might have loved, just does not work anymore. Or maybe now you hate the fit of the lower waist jeans, etc..You won't miss what you get rid of-you will forget everything! Once in a blue moon, I mean a blue moon, I will think, Gee I wish I still have that dress-but it is so hardly ever, that it does not matter, let alone right now I cannot tell you anything I at some point missed!
I prefer Good Will or another charity, some people like to sell their stuff or put on consignment-just too much extra work for me.
Think about how much you really need and can wear. We live in such a consumer society, it is really hard not to buy-but really, do you need 30 pairs of jeans?
Let alone the ridiculous price of so many jeans..but that is a different story!
Organizing Shoes in the Closet
Shoes-keep them organized too. I love shelves for shoes, it displays them all, keeps them off the floor and safe from getting stepped on, and they are so fun to look at!
Or shoe racks on the wall or over the door, not my first choice, but you have to work with what you have.
Go somewhere like Ikea or The Container Store, or Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, somewhere where you can buy closet organizers-it will make all the difference
Shoes-I have a lot, too many, but mostly when I buy a pair I make myself look at the other ones and see what I can give away-you can never wear 40, 50+ shoes it is just crazy-I don't wear the 30 I have..
I also keep all my shoes out and don't put away for seasons. I don't like putting things away for seasons-because there is so much than can be mixed and matched.
Shelving-shelves are for things like sweaters, purses, scarves, hats, but not for old dry cleaning bags, things you are meaning to get rid of, sweaters that need cleaning, etc!
It is great if you have the room for hooks to hang things like belts and scarves.
I do keep a few precious family photos in my closet, my jewelry box, and my collection of Vogue September issues dating now more than a decade.
If you have a walk in, have a chair-something simple!
Think of your closet like a nice store. Would you want to go buy clothes or a dress at a store where you have to rummage through everything, things on the floor, out of sorts, not organized, etc..NO! So don't keep your own things that way.
I worked with someone once, who actually packed a black shoe and a brown shoe-that is just simply beyond me-how could anyone be that unorganized-although I should not have been dismayed after I saw her car-egads! Let alone she was 30 minutes late picking me up at the airport-amazing how unorganized just follows some through their whole day!
