Such an important room, don't ignore this one. If you are lucky to have a utility room, use it! Some people are fortunate enough to have a big and beautiful laundry room, with wonderful flooring, a built in sink, huge stylish washer and dryer, counters! Etc. I don't have anything like that but here are my tips. Have a washer and dryer that match-it will make you happy. Matching in color and make. White will never go out of style. I love anything in black. I would really think about orange or red-will you like it for years? If you have cupboards use them! And use them with order. Don't just throw stuff in there. Soap and dryer sheets and bleach, whatever, keep it all together and keep it clean-nothing worse than a bottle of liquid detergent with dried on sticky detergent down the side and now on the cabinet!
Cleaning Supplies for Utility Room and Laundry Room
Keep your cleaning supplies in the utility room! Get yourself a cute little container that you can carry them around in. Keep it all there. Now while I love cleaning supplies, I think there are way TOO many out there. Here is what you for sure want (and if you like the Green type, go ahead. It can be hit and miss with those, but I use some myself..) In no specific order..
Floor Cleaner
Murphy's Oil Soap for Wood
Leather Cleaner
Glass Cleaner
Counter Cleaner
Comet-I love it, and now it does not scratch
Furniture Spray Cleaner
Sponges
Rubber GlovesJ
A Bleach Cleaner for use now and then-I still love it in the shower, I just do-is there really anything like the smell of bleach when you walk into a clean bathroom??
Pumice Stone
Magic Eraser
An air spray, like Lysol, so freshen up rooms-I love the sprays from Pier One too they are awesome!
Cleaning Rags
That is about it-these are all you need for general purpose cleaning of your bathrooms and dusting.
Laundry Room Floors
For cleaning floors, beyond wood with Murphy's Oil Soap, I just use a little cleaner, like mild dish soap mixed with hot water in a bucket. I think mopping or cleaning a floor on your knees with a bucket and gloves, of course, is still the best way to go! People make the mistake of buying a million cleaning agents-just like clothes, you really only need the staples, the rest just sits there.. Also your laundry room is great for the iron and ironing board, pet snacks, odds and ends like plant food, postage tape, and yes the junk bin!! The floor should be attractive so you don't cringe when you see it! So many laundry rooms look like the long lost child of the house-but how long do you spend in there!!
I had white linoleum in my laundry room. It was okay, I would never pick it, but going from a really nice wood floor to white linoleum looked terrible. So I got the peel and stick linoleum floors that my mom told me about from Home Depot, the ones that look like slate, and wow, what a difference! It took a good few hours to do, but you can just cut the things with household scissors-the glue kind of reminds me of the syrup from Gilligan's Island that they made in one episode-I mean, it is sticky!! But beyond that simple stuff, and you will love your floor and get compliments, I always do! A cute little rug for some color is a nice touch. Children's artwork hung looks awesome. Little accessories here and there. Keep the counters free of clutter if you are lucky enough to have them. Use them and then put the clothes away
Laundry rooms are workhorses of the house, and that is good. But don't leave stuff lying around in there, half unfinished-that is just nuts. Get the laundry done and put it away, as you know, there is always more. I had someone tell me once that her sister could just sit and read a book next to a laundry basket of clean clothes-meaning they were not getting put away-I remember that, I thought it was crazy! If not now, then when??... comes to mindJ
Think of the laundry room like a tiny heart of your house. Not nearly as fun or busy with people as the kitchen, but still an important reflection of you.
Now some people are lucky to have those big rooms!! You can do artwork in there, wrap gifts, have a party-if you are lucky like that, I envy you!
Do NOT let the laundry room become a junk room, from everything from shopping bags and half folded clothes, to old magazines and mail waiting to be sorted-do it now J
Oh, and have good lighting. I had a really pretty tropical style ceiling light put in, it made all the difference from the total junk utility light that was in there-which was so depressing.
And paint the room a fun color-mine is called Summer's Tan, just the name alone much less the sun bronzed golden color, makes me happy in there.
