Type of Ants - Carpenter - Fire - Sugar:

Ants live almost everywhere but tend to be more prevalent in warm climates. With about 10,000 types (species) of ants, the most common that cause problems to humans are carpenter ants, fire ants, velvet ants, red ants, sugar ants, army ants, and black ants. The average life expectancy of an ant is 45-60 days and they are social insects that live in colonies with up to 700,000 ants. Ant colonies include one or more queens and they often nest in the ground or in wood. Some ants will bite you like the red ants and others have a slight sting. Carpenter ants nest in damp locations (often in water damage wood around homes) and then make it into your house to find food crumbs or insects. You can look for signs of carpenter ants in your home by spotting - trails of workers around the kitchen, pantry or other areas where food is, see sawdust like material that workers displace from their nests, or listen at night to the rustling noise they make in walls. Many people turn to home remedies to try and eliminate carpenter ants but find that they need something more powerful to kill them off completely. One product that comes up often is Advance 375 A Select Ant Bait which is a good start when wanting to avoid too many insecticides or sprays. The Advance 375 A ant bait kills Carpenter ants and many common varieties of ants such as Argentine, Bigheaded, Crazy, Field, Fire, Little Black, Pavement, Pharaoh, Odorous, House and Thief Ants.

Red ants or fire ants were brought to the United States probably from Australia and have been found in Texas where people have been dealing with them every since. Fire ants can kill small animals by stinging them with a toxic venom. Humans are rarely killed by fire ants, but reactions differ from individual from individual. The 2 best products and treatments for killing red ants (or fire ants) are Maxforce Ant Fire Ant Bait or Maxforce Ant Granular Bait. These baits allow the foraging ants to take the bait back to the queen ant and it will eventually kill her which should eliminate the ant problem. There are lots of ways to get rid of sugar ants which tend to be most prevalent in homes and apartments. You can view some of the home remedies at http://www.doyourownpestcontrol.com/ants.htm. I notice that when it rains a lot in the early winter months I get sugar ants looking to escape the underground flooding and also during the hottest months of the summer. They come into my kitchen area or front entryway and are hard to deal with. I do spray Raid on them and it works temporarily, but unless the queen is killed they will tend to come back over and over again. This required me to get a professional pest control company to come out and spray for the ants. We will discuss those services below and determine if the cost equates to success.

How to Get Rid of Ants - Ant Control:

When home remedies don't work, or the ant problem is out of control in your house, most people call out the professionals like Orkin or Terminix. Most ant control companies will do an indoor and outdoor spray that is safe for pets and children to help eliminate the ants in your home. I was able to get a 90 day guarantee thrown in that no ants would re-enter my house after the spraying. Usually the cost is associated with how much actual spraying has to be done, but consider the average cost to be $100-$150. Keep in mind that even when the do it yourself remedies work, you are probably only killing the ants you can see but not the ones you can't see which means they will probably keep reappearing. Orkin pest control is another national ant control company that will help get rid of Argentine ants, carpenter ants, Fire ants, Odorous ants, Pavement ants, Pharaoh ants, and Thief ants.
