Bay Window Buying Guide:

Like many homeowners, I'm always thinking of new ways to improve the look and feel to our house. Most projects involve either indoor our outdoor improvements, but installing a bay window can give added benefits to both. You will get increased light into the room that has the bay window as more window space is added. At the same time, the exterior to your home gets a new look where the bay window is now located. I've been driving around neighborhoods lately trying to find a design that I liked so that I could give it to the contractor to see. Going online is another way to find something you like, but I prefer to see the window on an actual house to determine if I like it or not. There were 2 rooms in our downstairs family room and living room where I wanted to add the bay windows. One would face our front yard and the other would extend into the backyard. I grew up with bay windows that my mother had added in our bedrooms and always liked the little seat you could sit on with the extended window area.

What is a bay window - Lots of people want to know how a bay window differs from a bow window. Bay windows are 3 windows - the center one is parallel to the wall of the house and the other 2 flank the sides at 30 or 45 degrees. Often, you will see the two side windows opening casements or double hung. The extra ventilation is a nice bonus when there is a breeze and the interior temperature of the house is hot. A bow window has 4 or more windows (experts say that 5 is normal) and the side sashes tend to be casement windows. The look and feel is more of a rounded effect than the "box feeling" associated with bay windows. When it comes to materials, you really have 2 choice. Wood or vinyl windows. Although wood is more popular, vinyl can be more economical and it's long lasting as well. The top manufacturers of bay windows are Pella, Jeld-Wen, Andersen, and Milgard. You can find bay windows in home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowes and have them professional installed (see installation below). I see ads all the time in our newspaper for Pella windows with the federal energy tax credit. Replacing old, outdated windows may be a wise decision when it comes to heating and cooling a house. You may see a huge difference in your heating bills in the winter.

Bay Window Installation:

Ok, you've chosen a window design and bought the necessary materials. On several home remodel websites we found the time involved was estimated to be about 3 hours. The bay window installation involves enlarging the current opening often by cutting out the necessary space. Eight foot bay windows are about average size and require the installer to make sure the suspended window will be sound structurally. The project will take much longer if you are putting in a bay window where no window was before. As for those of you that are DIY homeowners - probably best to leave this type of project to a professional contractor. The job will go much faster with the expertise of someone who has a history installing bay windows. As with any home project, always try to get 3 estimates from reputable contractors so that you can compare prices and make sure the project is done not only properly but within a budget. I usually ask friends or family first and then check out websites like Craigslist to get my estimates.

Bay Window Cost:

Just how much does a bay window cost? If you are looking for just the cost of the window, expect to spend anywhere from $700 to $2000. Add in custom design work or a slightly bigger model and the cost can go up to $6000. Now add the installation cost and the total price is $1500 to $7000 per window. When an installer is required to create a whole new opening for the window (starting from scratch), then the price can escalate even more. Sometimes a small roof needs to be built above the window or perhaps all you need is a roof skirt. This can add another $1000 to $2000 to the project. These are issues that should be discussed before the project gets under way and any good contractor will disclose all these details. Window replacement and installation is a popular home improvement project and one that often pays for itself with lower energy needs for the house and an improved and updated look both inside and out.
