If you buy books, then storing them someplace where people can see them or get access to them is essential. We all grew up with little bookshelves in our rooms, but as you amass more books in your lifetime, you either need to give them away or put them in boxes or upgrade to some nice bookshelves in your home. Many newer homes have built in book cases which make it much easier to store books. Built ins are great space savers as well as the corner book cases on the market. Some of the more extravagent book cases have glass doors (too much for me). If you have a large collection, then perhaps a ladder book case is what you need. Those are the type you see in mansions or libraries where the books are stacked so high you need a ladder to access them.
To get started in looking for a good book shelf, go to Bookcasesgalore.com. They carry basic bookcases, decorative bookcases, corner bookcases, children bookcases, barrister book cases, and cube bookcases. You can get them made from wood, metal, rattan, aluminum, and glass. The most popular color styles are those in white or black. A standard book shelf should cost around $150-$300. A set of really nice built ins requires a carpenter and lots man hours to install which means between labor and materials you are looking at $2500 or more. Book cases can be used for than just books, you can store other things like picture frames, antiques, photo albums and games. Other online sources for book cases are Staples.com and CSNBookcases.com.
Corner Book Case:
Corner book shelves are a great way of taking advantage of unused space in your house to store things. They reside right where 2 walls meet and most pieces of furniture just won't fit. These unique pieces are shaped more like a triangle and back up to both walls which leaves you a nice looking piece of furniture that is practical as well. On almost all the book case websites we went to, the Greensboro Corner Bookcase ($159) is the top seller and most popular. It comes with 3 adjustable shelves, crown molding, and is finished in white. Our personal favorite is the Charlotte Corner Bookcase ($179) with its rustic appearance and efficient design.
Built in Bookcase - Headboard Book Case:
Built in book shelves are a real plus when you buy a home. The added storage space is always useful and it's a nice touch. Built in book cases can go almost anywhere there is space, but traditionally they have been put in dens, family rooms, or living rooms. Per websites like Home and Garden TV or This Old House, you should come up with a basic plan and dimensions of what you want before contacting a carpenter to do the work. Remember they will be "built in" so they will become part of the house. We suggest looking through your local yellow pages for carpenters who can give you bids on the job and then go with the one that feels most comfortable. A headboard book case attaches right to the bed frame of your bed much like a traditional headboard, but these have storage areas for books, cd players, etc. They run about $150 for a decent one from Target. High end ones are much larger and are closer to $500.
Kids Book Cases:
It's always fun buying kids furniture because they come in all shapes and size with great themes. Sears has a website that is just for kids at Searsroomforkids.com and it carries some great book cases with castle themes, doll house book cases, racecars, trains, and much more. Although I say their prices are too high, PotteryBarnkids.com does have quality children book shelves and book cases. Many are internet exclusive only (which means you won't be seeing them in the store any time soon) and they cost about $300 for a decent size one.
