One staple in our kitchen has been a bread box. I grew up with one - it always kept things like bagels, loaves of bread, and muffins. Some people like to refrigerate their bread items, but I don't like sandwiches that have cold bread. We recently had to go out and buy a new one after the hinge mechanism finally went out. The vast majority of bread boxes are sold in stainless steel these days and some are over $50. I still see the wooden bread box in stores along with materials like ceramic, stoneware, acrylic, and enamel. You will find them in stores like Target, Walmart, Sears and Sur La Table. They range in price from $25 to $60.
What to look for in a bread box - Besides materials (discussed above), you need to choose the type of closure the bread box will have. The rolltop bread box is the most popular variety on the market. They are easy to load up with buns, bread, etc. and opening or closing them is simple. Sometimes I find that bread on the inside will get smashed when I close it. Usually, I just maneuver the bread around until the close is secure. The drop down, or fall front, models are another common type of bread box. Brabanita makes a great stainless steel version which rates quite high on Amazon. You will also find hinged, handles, and lift-off bread boxes. Top brands include Polder, Brabanita, WMF, Eva Solo, Blomus, and Mountain Woods. The argument has been that refrigeration will stop the bread from getting bacteria and mold while bread boxes just can't compete. That is not necessarily true. It depends on how long the bread sits in the bread box. Prolonged storage may result in mold - my rule of thumb is no longer than 1 week in the box. Best Bread Box:
RECOMMENDED - The Brabanita Rolltop Bread Box is the #1 seller on Amazon and we saw it in several stores. The bread box can hold 2 full loaves of bread and the stainless steel is fingerprint proof. The Brabanita brand offers high quality design and sleek styling features. The roll top models are most popular, but they also sell quite a few of the fall front models. Reviews for their bread boxes are superior to almost all other brands we researched. Most are priced at $50, so yes they are a bit expensive, but compared to the very expensive WMF (below), they seem like a bargain. See all the Brabanita bread boxes here.
Stainless Steel Bread Box:
The WMF Stainless Steel Breadbox gets near perfect reviews and it's no wonder why. The 18/10 stainless steel looks terrific in modern kitchens. The rolltop lid is easy to use - even for the kids in the house. The rubber feet on the bottom of the box keep in in place no matter where you place it. Store breads, buns, rolls, bagels, scones, and more. The one drawback is the $100 price tag. Is it worth? There are similar bread boxes (listed above) that perform the same function for about half the cost.
