Ipods and portable mp3 players might be all the rage with the teenagers and perhaps a few years from now CD's will hardly exist, but those of us in our 20's, 30's or 40's, we have a lot of CD's that need to be stored somewhere. At least they are not bulky and awkward as records that our parents had, but they still need to be kept clean and protected. I have over 500 CD's that I have acquired through the years and they are currently in a nice CD storage cabinet that cost about $299. I used to have wooden CD racks, then I tried a wall CD rack (that was with about 80 CD's) and then I finally decided to get something that could hold 1000 CD's so I would hopefully never have to buy another storage rack/display. The market is still full of CD holders for almost any amount (20, 40, 100, 1000+). CD racks are made from wood, glass, metal, and wrought iron. If you only have a few CD then the smaller revolving CD racks are nice since they fit on countertops or bookshelves. Even the wall mount CD racks are ok for smaller CD music collection, but they can't hold 100's like the floor stands can. Below we will discuss the best CD drawers, CD cases, CD Spinners, and CD boxes.
When deciding on the CD storage unit that is best for you, consider how many CDs you currently own or expect to own over the next few years. Music is turning more and more into digital formats, so assume that you will probably not be buying too many CDs in the future and focus on your current collection at home. For small CD collections, we recommend tabletop CD spinners and CD holders. The 138 CD Tower Spinner Rack ($39.99) at Spinkeeper.com is constructed silver metal and fits in almost any room. Easily spins and convenient for smaller areas. Some of the more unique cd racks from Spinkeeper.com are the CD Wave Tower in Cherry ($28.95) - a curved tower that holds 110 CDs made of steel. The ELF in Titanium ($87) has a cool titanium finish, and is a stackable unit with adjustable shelves for plenty of variations. For those of you who work at your computer all day and want an easy to access CD desk rack, then we suggest the 2 Row Tray with Guide Rails ($25) - accommodates all popular media formats (DVD, CD, VHS), almost like a rolodex for music. CD Tower racks are great for corners where very few other people of furniture can fit. The 399 Corner Storage ($115) from Spinkeeper.com fits right into corner spaces, holds 400 CDs, and has adjustable shelving. If your collection is large enough, then you may want to consider a CD/DVD glass door rack. They can run over $500 for a really nice one, but we like the Deep Cherry Finish Double -Wide Cabinet for $399.95. It looks great amongst other furniture, holds almost 1000 CDs or other media formats, and requires some simple assembly.
CD Storage Display:
As noted above, I have a beautiful cherry storage cabinet for my CDs and it holds something like 1000 CDs. The best current model I was able to find was at Stacksandstacks.com with their Oak Multimedia Cabinet - Solid Wood ($290). The unit holds 612 CDs or 201 DVDs. The solid oak construction will handle the weight of the CDs no problem. Adjusting shelving lets you organize your CD/DVD collection any way you want. The storage rack is fully assembled so no hassles there. The 2 doors open up to reveal even more storage space behind each door. The only problem I had with my CD storage cabinet was that one of the doors hinges eventually gave way and has bent so that the door scrapes the bottom of the cabinet everytime I open it. It still works, but eventually it will dig a huge line along the bottom of the cabinet and potentially ruin it. I have tried rearranging the CDs so they are more balance on both sides and that does help. I would say limit how many you put on the inside of the doors since the added weight may effect the hinges. Another site that offers beautiful CD/DVD cabinets is at http://www.spinkeeper.com/cdcabinets.html - prices range from $125-$300.
Best Wall Mounted CD/DVD Storage:
If placed properly, a wall mounted CD storage rack can not only look great but it will also keep smaller hands off your CD collection. We found an excellent solution on Stacksandstacks.com with their Triple Floating Wall CD DVD Media Storage ($139). It measures 34" x 48" x 8.25" and has an attractive design, is fully wall mountable, sturdy, and holds CDs/DVDs. Wall mounted units are perfect for any household where floor space is limited and your collection of CD's is rather large. It can hold up to 523 CDs or 213 DVDs or 124 videos. The same model is offered in a double floating wall design and a single (slim) design. The Spinkeeper.com site carries a 2 Row Wall Storage for under $100 and it can hold/store 349 CDs. The shelve are adjustable which makes arranging items beyond CDs easy to do as well.
