Greenhouses

What is a greenhouse? Greenhouses have been around for a long time. A greenhouse is basically an enclosed structure that provides an indoor warm, climate-controlled environment for plants, normally with some see-through glass-like siding that allows light and warmth to penetrate and then traps much of that heat inside. What are greenhouses used for? Greenhouses allow you to grow plants and seedlings all year long. They let you get vegetable crops propagated early, before the outdoor temperatures would allow. Tobacco, fruit, flowers, and other sensitive crops do well growing in an indoor greenhouse, and they can then be transplanted outdoors once the summer growing season begins. Greenhouses protect plants from insects, heat and cold. And you can grow tropical plants that would not normally thrive in your local environment. Many gardeners enjoy having and building their own greenhouse. In this guide, we will take a look at some of the best greenhouses you can buy for your home garden.

Greenhouse Plans - Building Your Own Greenhouse

Hobby greenhouses can be purchased in kit form and built right in your own yard. Some regions require a building permit for green houses, so be sure to check with your city before ordering and building something. However, hobby greenhouses less than 120sf are usually exempt. Start with a visit to GreenHouseMegaStore.com. They sell all kinds of greenhouse kits and supplies - exhaust fans, shutters, circulation fans, electric heaters, ventilation systems, thermostat and humidity controls, insecticides, pots flats and baskets, CO2 generators, fertilizers, hydroponic equipment, etc. The two basic styles of greenhouses are freestanding and lean-to. The lean-to attaches to the side of your home or other building. The skeleton of the greenhouse is normally constructed of aluminum poles with steel or cast-iron fittings and clamps. Frames can be made of metal, wood, or plastic (PVC). For a small hobbyist greenhouse, you might be able to get away with PVC framing, but we recommend the more solid aluminum frames for larger sized houses. You can also increase stability by building them on top of a metal base, which is an option for most greenhouses. Foundations can be as simple as ground stakes to wooden foundations to concrete piers and footings and slabs. Browse the best selling greenhouses here.

The structure/frame is covered with polyethylene overwintering film or polycarbonate plastic, with optional shade cloth over the top. The polycarbonate (called the glazing) is usually twinwall, and 6-8mm in thickness. Why use polycarbonate? Polycarbonate is much safer that glass - it is almost unbreakable, over 100 times stronger than glass. It allows 85% of light to penetrate it, similar to glass. And it is lightweight and easy to work with. A 48" and 10' long panel of polycarbonate (8mm, twinwall) sells for about $70. How much do lean-to greenhouses cost? Cross Country's 10'x12' model sells for just under $5000, while the 14'x24' sells for $10K. You can get straight or curved eaves, all kits come with a prehung storm door, automated roof vents, twinwall polycarbonate siding, and all kits come with an instructional assembly video.

Best Online Greenhouse Sites

Another good greenhouse site is GreenHouseKit.com. They carry all the major greenhouse brands - Easy2Build, EasyGrow, EZ Greenhouse, Garden, Germinator, Grow Racks, Halls Greenhouses, Hideaway, Home, InstaGrow, Juliana, Mini Pro, Quality, Rion, Sunrise, and more. The Sunrise Greenhouses are the best sellers in Europe - they've been making them for almost 30 years. Sunrise is famous for their onion-shaped design, giving it less wind-resistance and more strength. They use 8mm twin wall polycarbonate, 10mm on the front and back walls. How long does it take to assemble a greenhouse? For the Sunrise, about 6-8 hours for 3 people. Their 7'8" x 14' model sells for about $3500. They offer a 10 year warranty on the poly and 15 years on the frame. Shipping is free in the US.

If you are looking for a bigger greenhouse, check out the Grand Hideaway models. The 15'x15' sells for $16,000 - comes with an aluminum frame, and 1/8" clear tempered glass. Halls is another popular maker of greenhouses. You can get started for $700-$1500 on some of their smaller models, like the Halls Popular 86 Greenhouse for $999 (8'x6'), with a built in roof vent and sliding door, aluminum frame, 4mm twinwall polycarbonate glazing. For a started model, you should plan on spending a minimum of $1000 for the greenhouse and accessories. We dont' recommend initial purchases of more than a few thousand unless you are a greenhouse fanatic and have seen and experienced the size and features of the larger green houses firsthand. For general questions about greenhouses, we recommend you visit International Greenhouse Company FAQ page. For additional greenhouse details on types of greenhouses, location for your greenhouse, sizes, materials, etc. visit ACES.
