Indoor Fountain Reviews and Buying Guide:

Outdoor garden fountains have been a popular feature in backyards for decades and now interior designers are beginning to push indoor fountains to add style and flare to a home. I recently walked through some model homes in my area and found that many home builders are having wall mounted fountains installed in newer homes. I decided to do some research on indoor fountains and see how much they cost, what types are available, and how easy are they to install as a DIY (do it yourself) project. One of the first things to understand about indoor water fountains in your house is that they can add a touch of nature to our surroundings and hopefully bring peace and serenity to your life. The sound of running water can be very soothing to some people and having a small waterfall in your living room or entryway can be a very decorative part of your home. I even found some models that have accompanying noises like birds chirping to give an added sense of the outdoors.

Size is a very important factor when considering an indoor fountain. Something to large and it could overwhelm your house. Even the smaller tabletop fountains can be effective if placed in the right area. With all the materials that indoor fountains are produced with, it should be easy to find one that fits your home decore. They are made with slate, stone, metal, copper, glass, wood, and several other materials. Some will take up the entire wall (4 or 5 feetl tall) and hang beautifully while the water recirculates back up to the top and flows down once again. The experts say you should use water that has been purified by distillation. This type of water is best for reducing the build up of mineral deposits and calcium not only on the fountain itself but within the pump. There is not too much care that is required to own an indoor fountain, but you should change the water periodically and make sure the pump is never run dry. In reading reviews online for indoor fountains, some owners complain about splashing or pumps that go bad. Look for models where you can control the water flow and therefore reduce excess water from splashing over onto the floor or carpet. Pumps do need to be maintained and cleaned and some do run noisy. Check with the supplier if you have questions on the life of the pump in the model you are considering. The tabletop fountains could run as cheap as $50 while the taller wall fountains made with stainless steel are priced above $1500. The fountains with adjustable lights, sounds and flow options are the most expensive. There are plenty of websites that offer indoor fountains - our 2 personal favorites are Discountfountains.com and Simplyfountains.com. Both have large inventories of wall fountains, copper fountains, stone fountains, glass fountains, decorative fountains, and desktop fountains. Pricing and dimensions are listed for each model - installing is required once you get the fountain shipped to your home or business. Even Amazon.com carries a few fountains but we say stick with a website or store that focuses on indoor fountains for the best customer service and selection. In my local area I was able to find 2 or 3 shops that carry indoor fountains and they were able to give me price quotes and information over the phone. We have tried to list some of the more popular models and styles down below with websites that carry them and pricing.

Tabletop Fountain:

Not everyone is sure that a 5 foot wall fountain will look in their homes or offices so perhaps starting with a smaller, tabletop fountain is the way to go. Simplyfountains.com carries a wide range of tabletop, or desktop, fountains and most are priced from $40 to $100. One of the most popular models is the Envirascape Shimmering Towers($30) made by Homedics from resin materials and LED lighting makes it look like a lit candle on your table. The simple design is perfect for your first indoor fountain and owner reviews say this fountain is relaxing to listen to and beautiful to look at. It plugs right into the wall and the pump is fairly quiet as well. The Pouring Water on Steps Tabletop Water Fountain ($58) is a more elegant design with a cascading water flow that comes down a spiral staircase. This is a quiet fountain that is easy to setup.

Indoor Wall Fountains:

Wall mounted fountains are probably the most expensive of the indoor variety since they tend to be the largest. The Whispering Creek Wall Fountain - Rajah Slate ($900) is made by Adagio and is 46 inches tall by 22" wide. The look of this fountain is very eye catching with finished steel and slate. If you want a more decorative wall fountain, check out the "The Beginning" Handpainted Wall Fountain ($1850) on Discountfountains.com. It's hand painted, has a LED backlight, and is energy efficient. The variable speed pump lets you decide on the water flow rate. Since the waterfall effect on the wall mounted fountains requires the water to fall further than on other styles, we found more reviews by owners saying this type has issues with splashing. It's best to have this style place on a wall that hangs over tile floors, not carpets.

Floor Fountain:

The floor fountains resemble the wall mount designs except they come all the way down to the floor level. Therefore, they don't have to be mounted to the wall, just plug them in and place them anywhere. The mirrored and copper surfaces are my favorites in this style, but the slate and metal fountains have their beauty as well. The Tripilier Floor Water Fountain ($335) from Kenroy has an artistic design, smooth face, and the water gently cascades into the river rock basin down below. It stands 49 inches tall and 19 inches wide. The overhead light adds to the waters beauty and the water sound is adjustable. This particular model goes well in business offices as well as homes. Owners say they especially like the illuminated look of the water when the light is on and overall the pump is quiet. Another best seller on Simplyfountains.com is the Reflecting Floor Fountain ($260) which gives a reflection off the metal surface when the water flows down the fountain. Many of the reviews we read were by folks that aren't DIY handymen, so to hear that the setup and installation was easy is encouring for those of us that aren't good with household projects.
