Bissell Steam Mop Review - Bissell Steam Cleaners

Bissell: A Trend Setting Company Since the 1800's.
Bissell has been around since the mid 1800's and was founded by Anna and Melville Bissell in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Due to Anna's frustration cleaning sawdust out of the carpet, the first Bissell product called the Bissell Carpet Sweeper was patented in 1876. Just a few years later, the first Bissell plant was built in Michigan. Bissell has some additional interesting history behind it. When Melville died in 1889, Anna took over and became America's first female CEO of a corporation. Although Anna is no longer in charge, Bissell continues to be a trendsetting company. Today, Bissell makes vacuums, carpet deep cleaners, cleaning formulas, steam cleaners, sweepers, mops and brooms. The company also has a new line of eco-friendly products which include the Bissell Steam Mops. In this guide we will take a closer look at Bissell's steam cleaning products -- how they work, how much they cost, and what people are saying about them.

Why Bissell Steam Mops are a Great Product

I love having a clean house, but I hate mops. As soon as I found out that there were steam mops on the market, I ran out and bought one. Truly, this is a great innovation. So why is a Bissell Steam Mop a good idea? Steam is a natural sanitizer and with steam mops you can easily trigger the steam to clean the floor. The mops are lightweight and easy to use. I always found a mop to be too heavy. And who doesn't hate lugging around buckets of dirty water? I also really don't like overly fragrant chemical scents. The Bissell steam floor mop also eliminates that problem, as it is chemical free. You can use the steam mop on a variety of types of surfaces including tile, hard floors, vinyl and linoleum. And yeah, we've used a variety of Swiffer products for quick and simple cleaning of our wood floors, but I often find my socks dirty again the day after. For me, steam does a better cleaning job.

Bissell has three main models of steam mops. First, there is the Bissell Steam Mop Deluxe, which uses a water purification system. There is also the Bissell 1867 Steam Mop, which is the most popular model. Lastly, is the Bissell Steam Shot Hard Surface Cleaner which is designed to be perfect for hard to reach places. Now Bissell isn't the only company that makes steam mops. Other competing products include the Shark steam mop, the Envirosteamer by Eureka, The Haan steamer and the Steamboy T1 Steam Floor Mop (see all best-selling steam mops here). Steam mops are growing in popularity all the time. In fact, The Wall Street Journal recently did a piece on steam mops and advised not to leave any steam mop on a floor for more than 20 seconds or you could damage the floor. This particular article did mention the Bissell Steam Mop as a top choice.

Reviews of the Bissell 1867 Steam Cleaner Mop

So how does a steam mop work? You fill the tank with water, plug the mop into the electrical outlet (like a canister vacuum), and steam is pumped out the cleaning pad as you mop -- pretty simple. The Bissell 1867 Steam Mop Bare Floor Steam Cleaner sells for about $110. So far, 180 people have reviewed this product on Amazon and it has 4 1/2 stars out of 5 -- the 1867 gets significantly better reviews that the Steam Mop Deluxe listed above. Obviously, reviewers are very enthusiastic about this product. Reviewers state that this product really gets the floor clean. People love the convenience and the fact that the Bissell 1867 is so quiet. Additional touches on this model include a comfortable handle, ready indicator light, extra mop cover, a wall-mount storage bracket, and quick-release cord hooks. The mop comes with a one year warranty. Many people who bought the Bissell 1867 had previously used Swiffer wetjet. More than one reviewer stated that the strong smell of the WetJet had always really bothered them, and so they truly appreciated that the Bissell 1867 had no odors. A few words of advice from reviewers, however, you need to mop very slowly to get the floor clean. Also, don't overdo the steam button or you will end up with a very wet mop and wet floor - just apply more steam where you really need it. We also looked at Buzzillions.com for more feedback on this product from customers. On this site, the mop had a 4 star out of 5 star rating and 730 mostly positive reviews. In general, people love this machine and that it is lightweight and easy to clean. Reviewers also mentioned that it is fast, easy to use, and that the head gets into nooks and crannies. Another fact that many Bissell customers appreciate is that you can use it all around the house on different types of floors. Another note - the mop head cleaning pads are machine washable and resuable, so you don't have to keep buying new ones (like you do with a Swiffer).

Bissell Steam Mop Deluxe

If you are interested in a steam mop with filtered water, the Bissell 31N1 Steam Mop Deluxe Hard-Floor Cleaner sells for about $100. People love this machine, but the only complaint that came up quite a bit was that floors were left too wet after the cleaning was completed. One reviewer mentioned that it could be from the pads which are a polyester and nylon material instead of a more absorbent micro-fiber. A few suggestions were made for getting a clean floor. One idea is to vacuum before using the Bissell Steam Mop. Also, of course, change the pad frequently. Some reviewers mentioned that instead of buying the pads from Bissell, they simply used their own pads. Customers have even used microfiber pads with good results. Overall, our recommendation is to stick with the Bissell 1867 Steam Cleaner. The entire Bissell line is here.
