EdgeStar Portable Air Conditioner Review:In the hot months of summer, there are only two things that can make life bearable: plenty of cold water and a good air conditioner. Whether you are in your workplace or your home, sometimes you just need a blast of cold air to help jumpstart your mind and body into action. While central air conditioners are certainly much appreciated, they can also be expensive, and a bit inconvenient. If you turn on your central air but are staying in one room, you're decreasing efficiency and running up a nice energy bill. If your air conditioning unit is in your living room but you are cooking in the kitchen, things can feel pretty steamy pretty fast. And what about sleeping? Many people find that they are unable to sleep in hot, or even warm, temperatures, but you don't want to crank up your unit in another room. Luckily, though, you don't have to sweat it. A portable air conditioner can be the answer to all your needs, helping you stay cool in the kitchen, living room, bedroom, and even in your office. Hey, why not bring it with you to parties? You'll be the most popular one there guaranteed.
Why Do You Need a Portable Air Conditioner? - In many areas of the world, air conditioning is not a luxury; it is necessary to avoid heat exhaustion and exacerbating conditions that make people vulnerable to excessive temperatures. And sometimes, really, it's just nice not to have to worry about sweating through your clothes. Though, on the downside, there is no excuse to skip your exercise routine for the really hot days. The benefits of a portable air conditioner over window units or central air are many, but among the most important is its portability. Big surprise, no? But it's true. No one stays in one room of their home all the time. Even if your apartment is small, you are likely to go from the kitchen to common room to bathroom to bedroom. Having a central air conditioner is certainly convenient, but cooling the entire house or apartment can be very expensive, especially considering dramatically rising energy costs. Portable air conditioners are much more energy efficient than other units, and they target the areas you want to cool. Take it from room to room as you need. When two or more people live in one place, it is almost a certainty that they will prefer different temperatures; some like it hot, and some like it cold. Portable air conditioners allow you to tailor your indoor temperature to your liking. If you prefer it cooler, you simply place a portable unit in your room. That way, your roommates, kids, or spouse can have it warmer in their areas. What about when you're all together? Well, they'll just have to put up with what you like, right? Portable air conditioners are wonderful when you want to cool off for exercise. Exercising during very hot days can be dangerous, so if you cool your room a little, you can jump on the treadmill or pop in a video without worrying about being too hot. When you're done, you can always turn the power down or even off. You can bring one with you to your office, your friend's homes, put one in your elderly relatives' homes, and even bring it on a boat or recreational vehicle. There is no end to the uses you will find. You will also find a smaller electric bill.

Saving money is the ultimate in convenience. Which EdgeStar Portable Air Conditioner is Right for You? - There are two important considerations when you are choosing your EdgeStar portable air-conditioner. One is the size of the room you will be cooling. The point of a portable air conditioner, of course, is that it allows you the freedom to move from room to room, but take a few minutes to think about the average size you will need. Does your home have small or large rooms in general? After that, you will need to think about your budget. Units that cool larger rooms tend to be more expensive, so that is something else to keep in mind. If you are going to be using the portable air conditioner to supplement a central air system or window unit, you may want to choose a smaller unit. With that in mind, there are several models from which to choose:
*Edgestar Koldfront PAC8000S. ConsumerSearch rated this the Best Reviewed portable air conditioner on the market. Among its advantages: it exhausts water collected from the unit outside, it dehumidifies, has a remote, and is very compact. The Koldfront is an 8000BTU unit that is ideal for rooms under 225 square feet. No permanent installation is necessary, and the Koldfront meets RoHS standards (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). Among the only cons that were noted by ConsumerResearch was that some users found it a bit louder than other AC units and it is not as effective on larger rooms. For small rooms, though, you are getting more than your money's worth. The Edgestar Koldfront can be found on Amazon for $259.
*Model AP14000HS. This is on the other end of the room spectrum. The AP1400HS is designed for rooms up to 525 square feet. It is a 14,000BTU, 4-in-1 unit with AC, fan, dehumidifier, and heater, making it a convenient year-round companion. Like the Koldfront, it has a self-evaporative system for condensed water, remote, LCD display, timer, and more to make you cool (or warm) and comfortable all year long. It is about $500, which is a good deal for the convenience of having 4 units in 1. It rated a 8.4 out of 10 from TestFreaks.com for its great cooling ability. The AP14000W is also designed for rooms of this size. They are comparable, but the AP14000W doesn't have a heating capability.
*AP10000HW. For rooms up to 350 square feet, this 10,000BTU unit is ideal. It, too, has a self-evaporative design, needs no permanent installation, has a digital display, timer for on/off, and a washable pre-filter and replaceable carbon filter. It is on casters for added convenience. This is a great portable air conditioner for mid-size to large rooms. It has a nice mid-sized price as well: it can be found for about $350 at appliance retailers.
