Hardwood Floors - Bruce Hardwood Floor:

Hardwood floors are beautiful and can be a wonderful investment in your house. They are much more expensive than carpets, but the longevity and less daily/weekly maintenance make up for the difference in price. Hardwood floors offer a classy touch to any home and they hold their value over time very well (great when trying to sell your home). There are lots of types of hardwood floors and we suggest going to a site like Hardwoodinstaller.com to research the various brands - Appalachian Hardwood Floors, Bruce Hardwood Flooring, Kahrs Hardwood Floors, Anderson Hardwood Floors, Hartco Wood Floors, Harris-Tarkett Wood Floors, Pinnacle Wood Floors, Robbins Hardwood, Sheoga Hardwoods, Award Hardwood, WFI Hardwood Floors, and BR111 Exotic Hardwoods. Most manufacturers offer engineered hardwood floors, solid hardwood floors or parquet. Some of the hardwood floor species include Brazilian Cherry. Santos Mahogany, Maple, American Cherry, White Oak, Red Oak, Walnut, Southern Chestnut, Australian Cypress, Caribbean Rosewood, Caribbean Walnut, and Royal Mahogany. Bruce Hardwood Flooring is considered the biggest and best in hardwood flooring for houses. They produce more prefinished hardwood flooring than anyone else in the USA each year.

Refinishing Hardwood Floors vs New Hardwood Floors:

Most likely if you already have hardwood floors in your home, you are better off just refinishing them than trying to get new ones installed. However, if the hardwood floors are so severly damaged, new may be your only option. Again, I just had some hardwood floors installed and some of my current floors refinished so the 2 would match up in color and appearance. The refinished is about $3.00 square foot and is just as intensive as the new hardwood. You will need to remove all objects from the rooms that will need refinishing and seal off a portion of your home to keep dust and other particles to a minimum. Even those the men who did my house used hardwood floor sanders with dust bags, there was still plenty of dust floating around a week later and it stays on walls and on blinds. My floors were refinished 2 weeks after the new floors were put in to allow for settling in the boards. Depending on the finish used to do your floors, you will need to give them plenty of fresh air to help them dry. Make sure that the dust and other particles are at a minimum or else the floors will dry with imperfections. No matter which one you choose to do, you are in for a hassle. I literally had to leave my house for 2 weeks to get aways from the dust and refinishing smell.

Cleaning Hardwood Floors - Hardwood Floor Care - Hardwood Floor Maintenance:

Having just had some carpeted floors replaced with hardwoods in my house, I was shocked to hear that many of the ways I was taught to keep them clean are really myths. Don't use wet swiffers or Murphy's oil soap to care/clean for your hardwood floors. Wet swiffers can cause damage to floors while Murphy's leaves a residue build up and dulls your hardwood floor appearance. There are some general rules to caring for hardwood floors below:
  • Place bristle type mats at all exterior door entries. These will collect larger pieces of grit or small stones that may damage your new floor
  • Place area rugs at all entry points inside the home
  • Felt pads are a great idea for placing under furniture legs, but keeping them free of grit is just as important. Each time the floor is swept or cleaned check for any grit that may collect under a chair or furniture leg
  • Place area rugs at all water areas. Kitchens are most important in this case. One may not be enough and we suggest others in front of the refer/ice maker, dishwasher, and kitchen sink area
  • Use 1/8" masonite board making sure the surface and the floor is very clean when any appliances are moved
  • Each manufacturer is different, but ours suggest just plain old water and a little vinegar mixed in

Discount Hardwood Floors - Pergo Hardwood Floors:

Don't ever skimp on hardwood floors when you are getting the real thing. Going with a discount hardwood floor service is not a good idea since rushing a job or doing it incorrectly will ultimately lead to problems in the long run. There are other ways to save money, you can do it yourself (DIY) with Pergo hardwoods. Pergo floors are relatively easy to install and there are no straps or messy residue to clean. Over a weekend, you should be able to install about 300 square feet of flooring using Pergo hardwoods. You can go the Pergo website at Pergo.com. They offer installation tips and instructions with all their products to make it seamless and fast. They also offer information on finding a hardwood floor installer if you find the installation is not going as planned by yourself.
