Home Organization

Whether it's inspired by new years, spring cleaning, end of summer or maybe you just can't find your way out of the mess in your closet, basement, office, a specific room in your house or area in your garage, you are obviously ready to get seriously organized or you wouldn't be reading this! If you're like me, once you're ready you begin to research the best, most efficient way to maximize the space in your closets or find space for old pictures, winter clothes vs. summer clothes, batteries, tools, kids toys, roller skates, sports equipment and everything under the sun that we accumulate year after year. Perhaps your kitchen is too cluttered or the cabinets and drawers need to in better order. Well, this online guide will give you several ideas for organizing your home from the tiniest to the not so tiniest of projects.

How Do I Start Home Organization Projects?

There are some basic questions you will need to answer and some decisions to be made as you are getting started with your organizing tasks. When you decide on the area of to organize, go through your items and decide the following:
  • Do I use this often?
  • When did I use this last?
  • Will I need this to be in an open storage area or tucked away?
  • Could I use this in another part of my home?
  • If I get rid of this, do I know someone who would like it? Could I have a yard sale? Donate it to charity?
  • Can I throw this away? Will I use it again, ever?

Organizing Ideas

What Room, Closet, Drawer or Area Do I Start To Organize First? There are a couple of different approaches. You could start with the room that is the messiest, or you could start with the one you use the most or there is always the one you know you should start with because you should of done it years ago. Just pick one that you feel like you can handle and begin. As we know avoidance just adds years to the clutter! Here are some general guidelines of what you can do in some areas to give you a mental organizational start. These things can be purchased at THECONTAINERSTORE.COM.

How Can I Organize my Garage or Basement?

The garage can seem too big to organize, but not if you take it one step at a time. Start with the basic rules of what to keep and what to get rid of. After the weeding out process, begin to organize perhaps putting all tools in one area, paint and painting supplies in another, bikes, kids rollerskates, sporting equipment, etc. There are many different ideas to organizing a garage and we found some that we think are very useful like the overhead garage storage (great for holiday decorations, camping gear, etc.) for about $65 and up, or there are wall mount, standing, drawered, shelved tool organizers and complete wall units which are great for gardening tools, standing yard tools like rakes, your basic tools like wrenches and saws, screws, nuts and bolts, batteries, and more all beginning at $11.99 up to $600.00. If you want to protect your garage floor from oil stains and tire marks, you would need floor mat starting at $39.99 up to about $189.00. If you want to hang your bikes so they are out of the way you can buy a wall mounted bike for $59.99 or perhaps you'd like the bike hanger for only $12.99. If you need a nice space for golf clubs or fishing poles or skis, check out the Golf Equipment and Storage System for $79.99 and the hanging wall mount fishing pole rack (holds six poles) for about $42.99, and the ski rack which holds 4 pair of skis for $42.99 as well. You can find these at STACKSANDSTACKS.COM which is a San Francisco based business that has been in operation for 22 years.
