King Mattress Reviews:

King size beds are just as popular as ever and I recently went out looking for a new bedroom set that would include a king size mattress. Mattresses are offered in a lot more varieties than just firm or soft. Today you can choose from hypoallergenic, memory foam, pillowtop, plush and the list goes on. It seems there is something for everyone and that means more work for the consumer. In my research I found that the memory foam king mattresses get near perfect reviews and they are not much different than the more expensive TempurPedic beds you see advertised for $2000+. I have always been someone who likes a firmer bed than one that is excessively soft and cushiony. I was a bit reluctant to try the memory foam but after sleeping on it for a few days realized it was REALLY comfortable. My wife and I had had a chance to sleep on memory foam before we bought our current mattress as several vacation homes we rent have this similar mattress material. I like the fact that when either my wife or I shift or turn over in the middle of the night, the other one isn't woken up. With our old Simmons mattress it seems like the slightest movement and everyone was awake.

Choosing a King Size Mattress - With all the different types of beds, which is best for you? One thing that I do recommend - if you haven't already done so - and that is to get down to your local mattress store and actually lay down on several of the mattresses on display. There really is no better way to test a mattress than to get on it. Most store owners are all for it since they want you to make an informed buying decision. The most expensive are by no means the most comfortable for everyone as we all have our own needs. Some of us have sore backs while others need neck support or side support if we are side sleepers. The top brands are names like Sealy, Simmons, Serta, King Koil, Tempur-Pedic, and Sleep Innovations. Sears is a good department store to check out as well as national retailers like Sleep Country USA and Mattress World. Most offer "deals" all the time so it's hard to tell when you are getting a good price or not. Compare prices between retailers and also get online to Amazon.com as they usually have very competitive pricing. Consumer Reports does mattress surveys and tests to see which brands stand up to their claims. They looks at adjustable air, inner spring, and memory foam mattresses comparing prices, warranty, coil count, if there is any odor detected when the mattress is new, how supportive the mattress is even when sitting near the end and so on. The king mattress ratings often show Tempur-Pedic near the top along with Simmons and Serta. I like the pillowtop king mattress that we had before, but after 8 years it lost its "firmness" and developed a large swale in the middle. The king memory foam mattresses are nice and you don't have to go with a big brand name to get quality. As we mentioned above, the independent owner reviews on websites and in mattress forums for generic memory foam mattresses are fairly solid. Best King Memory Foam Mattress:

You will find lots of manufacturers producing the memory foam mattresses and while they are less than the Tempur-Pedic in cost, many consumers rate them nearly as high in terms of comfort. The good news about memory foam is that it is dust mite resistant and antimicrobial. Many of these king mattresses foam arrive tightly compressed and may need 2 full days to full expand. Some owners also mention that a certain odor is part of the mattress (for a while). The therapeutic aspect of memory foam is that it helps relieve pressure points and will ultimately improve your sleep. The #1 seller on Amazon is the Sleep Innovations 10-inch Sure Temp Memory Foam Mattress which is priced at $400 and features 7 inches of base foam and 3" of SureTemp memory foam at the top. The Cal King memory foam mattress from Sleepshop is made with 5.3lb Visco Elastic Memory Foam. It's slightly more at $550, but again reviews show it's well worth the money. Many owner comments compared these particular products to the TempurPedic mattresses and at about 1/4 to 1/3 the cost it's was a no brainer. Most experienced comfortable nights of sleep and less tossing and turning. The big advantage of a memory foam mattress compared to the innerspring ones it that the motion between spouses isn't felt as easily on the foam king mattress.

Firm King Mattress:

If you want a more traditional mattress, consider the Springport Firm King Sealy Posturepedic Mattress Set which sells for less than $1500. The mattress is 13 inches thick and it comes with the box spring. Stearns & Foster king mattresses range from $1000 to $1700 and you can get a Euro Pillowtop, ultra firm mattress, or luxury plush. Remember that most mattresses last about 10 years - some even less. As was our case, we could tell after a decade that the firm mattress we owned had lost it's orginal feel. We also had a pillowtop mattress which meant that we couldn't turn the mattress over every year or so and that allowed the indention in the middle of the mattress to form.
