Squirrel Removal from Attic:

In the last few weeks we had been hearing a sound coming from our attic. It was late September and early October, the prime season for squirrels to get a nest ready for winter. As the temperatures get colder, squirrels will look for a warm, dry place to shore up for the winter months. Unfortunately, the attic of your house is a popular spot for them. A few of my neighbors had had recent issues with the same thing so I knew we needed to have something done immediately. One of my neighbors had a squirrel in his attic and the darn thing chewed away at his electrical wiring so bad it cost an additional $500 just to fix that portion. Removing a squirrel from your attic is not the easiest thing in the world. You can try to do it yourself - they sell traps and other devices like strobe lights that will hopefully rid your house of any squirrel. Not all of that works and that's especially true if you don't block all access ways that allow them into the attic/house in the first place. I don't like the feeling of being in an attic or on top of my roof so I turned to a specialist in the field and had them inspect my house.
Squirrel Removal

In our situation, the first thing that the squirrel removal service guy did was climb up into our attic to inspect for squirrel nests or droppings. Then he proceeded to see where there might be openings in the roof or attic where a squirrel could actually get in. We had known that for the past few years birds had been entering the house to nest up near the roof line. We didn't know they had actually made it into the attic, but he showed me with a flashlight where their nest had been. The serviceman also saw 2 more holes where something the size of a squirrel could get in. Usually these are spots where the roof lines meet and there are small openings that lead to the attic or house. Squirrels are territorial and even if they are removed from their surroundings, there is a decent chance they will come back. If they are thought to be in the attic you will often see traps being set to remove them. We felt that there was enough evidence that they had been walking around up there and decided to screen off all openings with wire mesh and hope for the best. The scratching sounds that we had heard have disappeared for now, although I still see squirrels in the trees around our house. Perhaps they have gotten the clue that they can't enter our house anymore. View best selling squirrel traps here.

Squirrel Removal Cost:

How much does it cost to remove squirrels from an attic? We made a few calls, but most pest removal companies will charge an upfront fee (often very high) just to come out. In our case we found no one that would make the call for less than $200. We ended up paying $225 for the pest removal guy to do the inspection and close off the openings that may have been allowing squirrels or other wildlife to enter our attic. Squirrel removal from attic is probably something that the average homeowner is not capable of doing. It requires getting into your attic and potentially climbing a ladder up to the roof line to inspect access points. This work can be dangerous and a bit creepy. I am more familiar with my attic space than ever before and I could potentially fix any new holes that arise in the future. For now I'm going to assume that the problem is fixed. If they had to place traps up there, they would have charged $85 each time they came back to check on the space. The best solution is to chase out whatever is in the attic and then seal off all openings with heavy duty mesh wire. If you are a DIY homeowner the supplies would only be about $10 to $15 and time spent to do the work would be 2 to 3 hours. Do it right the first time and don't cut corners.

Squirrel Removal Service:

How do you find a squirrel removal service? - We looked in our yellow pages, then checked online and lastly asked our neighbors for references. I chose 1 from each source and got 3 estimates over the phone. Again, most will inspect for a small fee or some will do it for FREE. The actual work is where you will pay. Depending on how hard it is to access your attic or roof area will ultimately decide on what you pay. Also, the more openings that need to be sealed off will increase the cost as well. Some pest services don't take on squirrels or owls or other attic dwelling creatures. Get the best guarantee on their work and avoid signing long term maintenance contracts whenever possible. Most of these are gimmicks. I always figure if they can't get rid of something the first time, what is to say they will handle on the 2nd or 3rd times.
