Tree Trimming Service - Hiring a Tree Contractor:

Tree trimming is pretty much mandatory for homeowners, especially those of us who live in areas like Portland, Oregon where trees grow year round with the excess rain. Many modern neighborhoods have all the power lines below the sidewalks and power poles are no longer in the way of low hanging limbs. The majority of homes are still serviced by power lines that run high above streets and require the trimming of tree branches that might get in the way. During storms trees can sway and sometimes have limbs crack right off landing on power lines or even homes which makes it a dangerous situation. In my neighborhood power lines are not an issue, but branches that hang over my roof line are something I need to deal with periodically. If you have limbs extending over your roof or gutters then debris and leaves can clog gutters and potentially even ruin your shingled roof. Every few years I have a tree trimming service come out to my house and trim the branches that pose potential problems. The cost to get a crew out for the day is roughly $800 to $1000.

In our area we have big name tree trimming companies like Davey Tree or Morton Tree. They perform services like tree removal, trimming, cabling, pruning, stump grinding and more. Recently I had to hire a tree trimming service for both my yard and the front area to our subdivision of our homeowners association. My house had mostly trees that needed pruning or trimming and the cost was about $800 to have a crew of 2 guys work on the trees and clean up the debris when done. The project at the front of our street for our HOA was a little more extensive and required more than a days work and ended up costing $1000 (a truck with a small crane extension was necessary to reach some branches). Tree care is required for many reasons. For a tree to grow properly it needs to be trimmed and pruned for healthy growth. Also, some trees tend to impose their size not only on other trees but on houses as they get larger. Trimming them back from your home or from other shrubs and bushes is always a good idea. An aborists is a great place to start in terms of figuring out which trees need trimming and how complex the project will be. Some low branch trimming and pruning I do myself since I can reach the branches without having to actually climb into the tree. Higher branches tend to be more dangerous to get to so I leave that to the professional tree care guys and avoid falling. In some temperate climates trees and shrubs won't grow as fast, but in the Pacific Northwest our trees seem to grow a few feet a year and branches spider out in all directions making maintenance something we have to do every few years. I've even had trees removed because they were completely shutting out other trees or shrubs from growing properly. Tree trimming services are easy to find and most are fairly professional. I found one one Craigslist and the other was recommended by our HOA landscaping team. Always try to get a few references when looking into work like this since you want a professional crew that treats your yard as if it were their own. When the branches start falling you want them to be careful of shrubs and bushes nearer to the ground and anything else that might be in your yard. To keep trees healthy you need to take care of them and trimming is part of the process. Most tree contractors can do smaller yards in a day while larger acreages with more trees requires 2 days or more in most cases.

Tree Trimming Cost:

Most visitors to our site want to know - How much does tree trimming cost? I wish it were that simple to answer, but each scenario is slightly different. A good ballpark figure is that you will probably be charged $50 to $90 an hour for a tree trimming service to be on your property. I had 2 guys at my house all day and it cost roughly $800. As I watched the crew trim the trees around my yard it looked rather easy. The hard part was the cleanup and breakdown of the limbs after they were on the ground. When a tree gets trimmed most likely it's just smaller branches and limbs that get cut so the crew can work fairly quickly. If you are looking at a tree removal where the entire trunk and larger limbs need to be taken down it can be a longer process because they need to be careful cutting off huge chunks. For safety reasons a tree removal is often much more time intensive that trimming. After the branches are cut they will need to be put through a wood shredder or chipper or hauled away. This is all part of the cost to having your trees trimmed. Get at least 3 estimates to determine an average cost and make sure the company you go with has valid insurance since you don't want a limb to smash your house and then not have coverage for it. Check your homeowners insurance as well if that happens. If you only have a few trees that need trimming, expect the bill to be about $300 minimum.

DIY vs Hiring a Tree Trimming Service:

Many homeowners like to save a few bucks by doing work around their house themselves. Tree pruning is something I have done for years and when I lived in California it was easy since the trees never grew all that fast. Now that I live in Oregon and our yard is fairly mature, the trees are too high for me to consider doing it myself. Plus, wielding a chain saw up in a tree doesn't sound that appealing to me anymore. I do the best I can on smaller trees and low hanging branches, but the higher ones I leave for the professional tree trimming services. Safety is a huge concern for me and trying to balance on a ladder or in a tree with a chainsaw in my hand is beyond what I consider safe. Hire a tree contractor when in doubt and get the job done right. Another thing to consider is that you may not know which branches to cut or trim in the first place. Pruning branches on a tree is somewhat of an exact process if you want the tree to grow healthy and evenly. If you do take on a project of this scope, buy a book on pruning trees or get advice at your local Home Depot or Lowes.
