Finding an Apartment in Los Angeles (Southern California)Los Angeles is a massive metro area with expansive freeway systems and shoppin centers on every block. Finding an apartment can be a daunting task, especially if you are new to the area. What looks like a 20 minute drive on a map might actually be more like 45 minutes in real-time traffic situations. Apartments.com and Rent.com are great for finding availabilities and starting your search for a place to live. We have also found that Craigslist.org has plenty to choose from in their 'apartments' category with subleases as well. The first thing to do is try to determine which apartment complexes are near your place of work or school. You'll want to eliminate the need to commute as much as possible when living in LA. Do some driving through neighborhoods and districts of the city to see what looks desirable. Sure everyone would love to live near Santa Monica or Newport Beach, but that's just not realistic in terms of pricing for most of us. When you have found a few apartment buildings you want to check out, get on the phone with the property or apartment manager to get answers to the basic questions like floor plans, parking spaces, pool, fitness center, security entrance, are pets ok, deposit required, etc. If things check out then go stop by and take a look at the unit available. You may find that you will have to look at 10 or more apartment complexes to find your place so don't waste time driving around until you have at least called around first.
