We focus our apartment search on this site to those units nearest to Manhattan and New York City. The surrounding cities in New Jersey are places like Hoboken, Newark, Hackensack, Union City, Linden, Clifton, and Elizabeth. Rents are pretty high in most of these areas as the people living there often commute into NYC and get high paying jobs. There are lots of roadways that lead into NYC but trying to drive into work is awefully crazy and not suggested. Take public transportation as much as possible to avoid sitting in traffic for hours. As for places to live, there are apartments available in many cities with nice views of the water or city skyline that NYC offers. Rent.com and Apartments.com are two "apartment finder" websites that you can start with but we also suggest looking at some of the actually websites of specific complexes we have listed below. Craigslist.org has become an alternative website for apartment leases and renting with listings in each city. The advice of all experts is to drive around the individual neighborhoods you want to live in to get a feel for the area. Then call the apartment or property manager of a building you are interested in seeing and get answers to basic questions like deposits, are pets ok, how large are the bedrooms, does the unit come with a private parking space, etc. Security in some buildings is a huge plus so you feel safe no matter what time of day. Upstairs units are probably better than downstairs in terms of noise but they are also a huge hassle moving into if there are stairs involved in stead of an elevator.
The cost of living is high in the New Jersey Metro area, and 1 BR apartments will normally set you back $1200 or more per month. Below are listings for some New Jersey Apartment Rentals.
