I happen to live on the outskirts of Porland, Oregon in a small town called West Linn. When I first moved to the Pacific Northwest from the Bay Area not only did rents look like a bargain but so did real estate prices. I decided to rent for a year to get my bairings and settle on a location that fit my families needs. We searched for downtown apartments (this is when I had no kids) thinking that living in the metro area would really give us a good feeling for the city. Rents are still pretty reasonable near downtown Portland although they have shot up in recent years along with the climbing real estate prices. I first researched apartment buildings and complexes online at sites like Rent.com and Apartments.com but realized I was better off by finding the websites of the actual apartment community and doing my legwork that way. We have provided a variety of listing below for you to get started with as well. The sites have pictures, floor plans, amenities, rules, and locations. Portland is not that big of a city and even if you are 20 minutes out in cities like Beaverton, Tualitin, Gresham, Hillsboro, or Milwaukie, you can still commute into the city center each day. Apartment rents vary by city but you should be able to get a single bedroom for $600/month and 2 bedrooms for $900/month or cheaper. Compared to the other major cities on the west coast Portland is still a relative bargain. Drive around the city and outlying towns to get a feeling of which areas peak your interest. We did this for 2 weeks before we settled on Johns Landing at the time. Since then we have moved further out to West Linn which is more of a bedroom community. Call and talk to the property or apartment manager to find out if they take pets, what floor plans are available, pricing, and parking situations. Once you have those details discussed, take a look at the apartment to see if it fits your needs.
The cost of living is moderate in the Portland Metro area, and 1 BR apartments will normally set you back $600 or more per month. Below are listings for some Portland Apartment Rentals.
