If you are a website or blog publisher, chances are you are already familiar with AdSense. AdSesne is Google's ad network program where you can insert code into your webpages and display text (and graphic and video) ads targetted to your page content and your users interests. Anyone can sign up and start making money with AdSense. As with any money making program, there are always some "experts" out there that think they know more than you, and want to sell you their expertise. There are a LOT of sites claiming to sell AdSense secrets, promising you to increase your earnings by 2X or 10X, whatever figure they throw out. We'll talk about some of these sites below - buyer beware. But there are also plenty of legitimate sites out there as well with tips and suggestions on how to make more money using Adsense.
How to make money with Adsense
Making money with Adsense starts with having a website and good content. Throw in some traffic, add your Adsense code, and start watching the clicks and cash roll in. Sounds easy, right? It would be if you were the only one doing it. But there are 10s of millions of websites out there - how will you get people to come to your site? How will you get listed prominently in search engines? Some people use AdWords arbitrage to make money with AdSense. They buy Adwords ads for certain keywords, like "call center", hoping someone will click on the ad and visit their site. When you get to their site, you find lots more Google Adsense ads for call centers -- they hope you will then click on those ads to make them money. The trick is to find keywords that you can bid on for 20 cents or something, that will lead you to advertisers paying $1 - that's the arbitrage, finding those gaps and taking advantage of them. Search engine optimization is another key technique - making your pages search engine friendly, and getting enough inbound links to be noticed and ranked highly by Google. You can even buy links on other popular sites to build your link reputation. Others focus on top of the line content. This takes time as you wait for others to slowly link to you if you become an authority on a topic - it is also becoming more and more difficult to do if you are not already an acknowledged, established site. There are simply too many new sites being created daily, and it is nearly impossible to break away from the crowd.
AdSense Forums and Webmaster Help Sites
If you have questions about AdSense, a good place to look for anwers is WebmasterWorld.com. This forum-based community has several sections dedicated to Google related issues, specifically AdSense. You can post questions, view past questions and answers, and generally get involved (or just read) in how to make more money with AdSense, how to get your AdSense account reinstated, what secrets or techniques people are using to maximize their AdSense profits, etc. There are also a number of blogs dedicated to Adsesne news and information, like JenSense.com. Written by Jennifer Slegg, who purports to be the "leading expert on the Google AdSense contextual advertising program". Her blog cover Adsense mainly, but she also comments and posts news items on YPN (Yahoo Publisher Network) and Microsoft AdCenter. Recent posts include news about GooglePack, a suit against Google involving an Adsense publisher, and Viacom and MTV video ads for Adsense. She may not reveal any Adsense secrets, but this is a good site to keep up to date with things going on in the Google world.
Google AdSense Secrets
You may be surprised how many sites come up when you type in "Adsense Secrets" into Google. All kinds of ads come up promising to help you make more money with their e-books, software tracking programs, and more. Some specialize in Adsense on blogs, some focus on search engine optimization, some involve thoroughly tested color and placement techniques for getting the most revenue possible. Most of them also offer affiliate programs, hoping you will help them advertise and promote their program to still more Adsense publishers. You can make 30-60% by being an affiliate partner with some of these people. The first thing you will notice on all of these sites is that --- they want to sell you something. That's right, they have such great secrets for making a ton of money with Adsense, that they would rather SELL YOU those secrets for $59 instead of using them themselves to be multi millionaires. Common tips include things like testing a variety of color and placements on your site to find the best combination. True, with bad initial color choice and placement, you probably could indeed increase your earnings several times. But assuming you know something about Adsense and have read the basic Adsense tips and tricks, you probably know a lot of what they are going to tell you for a price. Some companies also offer to sell you ready made sites full of adsense content and ads - just insert your own adsense code. These are usually known as MFA (made for Adsense) or scraper sites, and have no real content and steal content from other sites - not something you should get involved with. Also, they sell these same packages over and over, so 500 other sites might already exist with the exact same content you are trying to use -- Google's duplicate content penalty will not list you in their search engine, and you won't get any traffic.
WHen you get to one of these Adsense secret sites, you will probably come across on big long scrolling screen with page after page of text - program information, references, quotes, stories, etc. - these "sales letters" go on and on, giving you so much information you think they really must be experts and must really have a good product - not necessarily. When in doubt, try doing a search for their company name or product name, and see if you can find any comments or reviews left by real customers. We've only tried 2 of these programs, so we can't speak for all of them, but what we saw was just common sense stuff you could learn from reading the forums for 30 minutes. It may not be the worst $50 or $99 you spend, but you may not feel like you are really getting your money's worth.
