Web Site Traffic - How to increase traffic and visitors to your website
How can I get more visitors to my website? How can I increase by web site traffic? Can I buy traffic or visitors? Where can I advertise to generate more web traffic? These are all questions you ask AFTER you take that first step and build your website. A web page, like a store, doesn't do you much good if no one visits. Stores generate traffic by being in a busy location like a mall or a busy street corner; they also advertise. While website advertising and promotion is different, it is also better in some respects. If you are operating in the physical world, you probably can't afford to open a shop on New Yorks 5th Avenue. But online, someone may well be just as likely to find or buy something at your site as they are at the sites of the biggest corporations in the world - the playing field is much more level in that way.
Getting More Search Engine Traffic for your website
The way most people originally find a website is when they are searching for something through a search engine like Google or Yahoo or MSN. Ideally, you would like your page to come up within the first page or 2 of the search results for your topic. Of course, in a crowded field like cars, electronics, jewelry, or whatever, this can be tough. There might literally be 10's of thousands of other sites in the same business vying for the same search traffic. To get your site to appear higher in the listings, you need to have other sites link to you (through some marketing and email campaigns) and work on your search engine optimization (seo) - making sure you have the right mix of keywords in your Title and Meta Tags and throughout your page. This is free search engine traffic if you can get it. Another alternative is paying for search engine traffic. Through programs like Overture (Yahoo) or AdWords (Google), you can bid on certain keywords and your web page will appear in the paid listing section on the sides or above the search results for certain key words you choose.
You can set your maximum budget and click amount (competing with others in your field that want this same traffic), and your ad will appear on those search pages. You may find yourself paying 5 or 10 cents per click or up to several dollars per click, depending on the popularity of your chosen keywords.
Link Exchange Networks for building traffic
There are also many link exchange networks where you can trade website traffic with other sites. You list other sites on your site, and you site gets listed on other sites, allowing you to share traffic. Some networks work on a credit system - for every visitor you send to a member site, you get a visitor sent to you by someone else, or some fraction thereof. This can also help in your search engine listings because sites with more sites linking to them get better placement generally.
Paying for web traffic
You'll also find a number of businesses offering to sell you web traffic - 50,000 visitors for $250 or something. You need to be careful with these, since you don't know where these visitors are coming from. Some of these people have systems whereby they generate pop-up or pop-under windows on people's computers, sometimes without their consent. The quality of the traffic you receive may therefore be limited. Keep in mind that non-targetted traffic may not be worth much - if you are running a online watch business, getting a bunch of pop-up visitors from a kids site may be worthless to you. You can also advertise on various ad networks, either by running banner and graphic ads or by paying for pop-up ads. These are generally more legitimate and can be an inexpensive way to generate web traffic and visitors who are interested in your products. Some examples are FastClick, Casale Media, and Interclick.
Stats and Counters for your web traffic
You may also want to look into some on the online counter and statistic services for tracking your website traffic. By inserting a small piece of HTMl code into your pages, you will be able to get information about the number of daily visitors, where they came from, what search terms they used to find you, where they are at geographically, and much more. Check out StatCounter.com, SiteTracker.com, Extreme-dm.com. Most of these offer free hit counters and can provide real insight into what is going on in your site.
