In order to buy an internet domain name, you will need to do a domain name search on one of the leading domain name registration sites like NetworkSolutions.com, Register.com, or GoDaddy.com. They all offer a section on finding a domain name that is still available. You type in the domain you wish to purchase (i.e. myname.com) and see what the results are. There are many different types of extension names (.com, .net, .gov, .org, .biz, .info, etc) but keep in mind that the .COM and .NET are the most popular. Once you find a domain name that is available, you will need to register the domain name. Domain name registration is an easy process whereby you give your administration/technical contact information and who is going to be the webhost (if you have that selected). There are lots of web hosts to choose for hosting the domain name like Yahoo, Media3, and Valueweb.com. The easy part of working with a web host is that if you give them the details of the domain you want, then they can take care of the rest of it for you and setup the DNS entries for your server location. Buying a domain name is the easy part to starting an internet business. The cost for 1 year can run about $15 (some services offer 1 year for as low as $5).
Domain Name Registration services?:
As mentioned above, there are several companies that perform the function of domain name registration. We prefer NetworkSolutions.com since they have been around the longest and they also offer web hosting, so they are essentially a nice one stop shop for domain name registration, hosting, and website marketing. Network Solutions offers a FREE domain name registration when you purhcase their web hosting packages ($9.95/month for a 1 year contract). Once they register your domain name to you, you get sent an email with all the specifics of how to upload files to your server, what the DNS server is, and they give you pointers on how to create a website if you have never done it before. GoDaddy.com is another company in this field that offers domain name registration at a discount as well, but they are not as recognized as Network Solutions.
Where do I get web hosting for a domain name?:
Web hosting has come down in price over the last few years and you can now get a good starter package with 2 GB of storage space and plenty of bandwidth for $10/month. We have always gone with Media3 or Yahoo Hosting. Yahoo and Network Solutions have some great small business packages that offer more and are priced lower than their competitors. Give them a try first and then look around if you need more.
Can I buy a used domain name?:
You can buy a used domain name if you want, but beware of past usage of the domain name. Some search engines blacklist domain names that conducted spamming or fraudulent activity from the site in the past and if you buy it, that won't change the way a search engine decides to list it. Some sites are dead ends, eventhough they have a good domain name. There are a few sites with used domain names for sale and we recommend using a certified site like Great Domains which is a VeriSign company. You can buy or sell domains through their service. Be sure to do some research on the domain name you want since the past can hurt the future performance. Another cool website called DomainsBot allows you to search for expired and soon-to-expire domain names in real time. They are the leaders in this field, and if you are on a mission to acquire a great URL, try these guys. One of the most expensive used domain names once sold for over $1 million, so they can be pricey. Our advice is to just buy a new domain since the name itself is not that relevant in getting search engine placement. Start with a clean slate that you can control.
