Google AdSense

Google started a revolution a number of years ago by introducing small, unobtrusive text ads in a world of loud, brash, animated, pop-up ads that were otherwise littering the Internet landscape. Different from banner and graphical ads, the text ads looked like part of the webpage they were on, and more importantly, they displayed ads based on the content of the specific webpage they were on - they were targetted. Originally, the ads appeared only on Google's website. They had a program called AdWords where advertisers would bid on keywords and then have their ads appear when those keywords were searched for. This limited the number of ads that could be displayed -- if only 1000 people searched for "Alpo Dog Food" that day, that's all the ads that could be shown. So what is Google AdSense?

Beyond AdWords - AdSense on other sites

To move beyond the ad limit on their own site, Google created the AdSense program to display their targetted ads on other websites. So if 100 sites related to dogs placed the Google AdSense code on their pages, their visitors would see ads related to dogs -- and Google could now display those Alpo ads on hundreds, thousands, and maybe millions of more pages that they could before. Now, the Adsense network and the AdWords base of Google advertisers work together across a vast network of millions of sites, displaying relevant ads when visitors go to Google or to a site in the Google AdSense network. How do you join the Adsense network? It is pretty easy - anyone can sign up at adsense.google.com as a Publisher - someone from Google will review your site and normally you can start placing your code in just a few days. Once you are approved, you can login to your account and start getting the code for your ads. It is very easy to add Google Adsense to your pages - you simply copy and paste some text code into the HTML code of your webpage where you want the ad to appear. Google does all the rest in terms of deciding which ads to display, figuring out what your page is about, and maximizing your revenue.

How much Adsense revenue does Google split with its partners? This is one of the strangest parts of the program - Google makes no commitments or guarantees about how much they will pay you. It is entirely up to them, and it can change at any time for any reason. Historically, from analyzing their financial reports, it appears that they pay out on average about 75% of Adsense revenue to its partners - but for all we know, some big sites might get 85% while some smaller sites might get only 50%. Or it could well be reversed - maybe some bigger sites get whittled down to 65% as they grow, while Google fosters smaller sites with 85%. Only Google knows for sure, and they aren't publicizing the data. In terms of the ads you can display, there are a variety of shapes and sizes to pick from. Google is also experimenting with graphic and video ads, and you can choose to allow that format on your site if you want. There is a limit to 3 ads and 1 ad links per page which you must not exceed. Ad links are just small lists of Google selected keywords or topics that take a visitor to a search page related to results for that word rather that direct to an advertiser page.

AdSense Statistics

You can also check out your statistics on the website, seeing how many ads you are displaying, what the click rate is for those ads, and how much money you have earned. Google sends payments between the 22nd and 28th or each month for the prior months earnings - your check for July should be mailed around the end of August. If you choose electronic funds transfer, you can have your payment deposited directly to your bank account and not have to wait for mail time. One useful tool in the stat portion is the use of what Google calls Channels. In Adsense, you can create and name a variety of channels to help you determine which portions of your website are performing best. For example, you might set up an Adsense channel for "Reviews", which tracks ad response and income only on the pages of your site that include reviews. To do this, you first creat the "reviews" channel, then pickup your Adsense code for that channel, then paste that code on the review pages of your site. This takes some work, but once in place, you can get top level figures, then break down your reports by different sections or areas of your website to see what's going on. You can also uses the same Google code across a number of websites that you own - you are not limited to a single domain name.

How much can you earn with Adsense? It depends on a lot of things, mostly traffic volume, ad placement and look, and the quality and intent of your visitors -- are they there searching for something to buy, or just reading the days news? Someone who arrives at your site via a search engine looking for product information is much more likely to click on a product ad on your site (and thus are more valuable) than someone on a news site related to Middle East politics. For many small publishers, they are happy to recoup the hosting costs for their hobby sites - $50 a month is great for them, and probably pretty easy to achieve. The spectrum of Adsense earnings takes off from there - some make a few bucks a day, a very select few make thousands of dollars per day. The real value of Adsense ads though is there ability to generate incremental revenue for ANY publisher, usually more than they could make from a standard banner ad or pop-up ad network, which makes the Net better for all of us.
