Reviews of the best Internet Providers (ISP's):When the internet first came to be, people signed up in the millions with AOL as their ISP (Internet Service Provider) mostly on a dial up basis (14.4-28.8K connection speeds). AOL still exists, but they missed the boat when faster speeds came along and their customers starting switching to DSL and Broadband internet providers. AOL now offers DSL service but competitors like Verizon, Earthlink, Covad, and Qwest have taken the lions share of the DSL subscribers in the US away from AOL and Netscape. We suggest that anyone on an old phone line using dial up service make the switch. The faster speeds of 250K or higher with DSL make up for the extra money spent on the service each month. Even DSL is getting outpriced in many areas by broadband cable connections offered by Comcast, RoadRunner, and Charter Communications which are now offering a teaser rate of $29.99/month for 6 months to start.
Cheap Dial UP service from an ISP:Dial up internet access is still available and millions of peope have stuck with it through the years as their way to get on the internet. AOL is the leader in this field with a $19.99 plan followed by Earthlink and NetZero that offer very competitive pricing with less frills ($9.95 from Netzero). Cheap dial up service is also available from Netscape (yes they still exist) and Peoplepc.com. How anyone can handle the slow download speeds and waiting for 30 seconds for a page to load is beyond me, but if money is tight, then go with Netzero since they are cheapest ISP around that we could find with a reputable dial up service. It's not too late and major companies like Verzion, Qwest and SBC offer very competitive pricing for DSL internet access. Verizon DSL is the best DSL internet provider we could find with a monthly rate of $29.95 for connection speeds up to 3 Mpbs on a 1 year agreement. You get 24/7 tech support, 9 email accounts, 10 MB of web space, and a choice between MSN or Yahoo for your online services. Qwest and Earthlink also offer some great DSL packages so make sure you check which ones are available in your area (many states have restrictions). We still think that a true cable broadband connection is better than DSL, but DSL is better than a dial up service provider.
How fast is internet service from Comcast High Speed Internet?Comcast high speed internet offers maximum download speeds of 4 Mbps (or 6 Mbps) and upload speeds of 384 Kbps (or 768 Kbps), depending on the product that is selected. Comcast as an internet provider is first rate with great customer service and always on service (I've had about 10 downtime hours over the last year). Connections can be somewhat spotty depending on your house layout and where the main computer is hooked versus where you are trying to get your 2nd computer or laptop online. Mostly, though, the wireless broadband connections are really good and incredible to use. You can get wireless broadband internet access from Verizon, Comcast, and other major broadband internet providers. You will need a wireless router on your main computer to give wireless access to the other computers/laptops you want online. A wireless router from Linksys or D-Link are about $50. Who wouldn't want to be able to work from home in their backyard enjoying the sunshine instead of sitting in an enclosed office at the workplace.
