Acoustic Guitars Guide - History:

When I was a kid I was addicted to MTV and bands like Bon Jovi, Kiss, Megadeth, Prince, Poison, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Limp Bizkit, Creed and so many more cool bands. At that time almost all of the music on MTV and VH 1 was based on electric guitars so I always thought acoustic guitars were for bands like the Beatles, or Garth Brooks (which I was not into at the time). The reality though is that most of my favorite bands wrote a majority of their songs on acoustic guitars, and then used electric guitars to record in the studio or for playing live when they would tour. A great website for a complete history of the acoustic guitar is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar#Acoustic_guitars. This website offers picttures of the instrument and a breakdown of all the pieces that make up the guitar like the headstock, nut, frets, body, inlays, neck, strings, tuning, heel, bridge, and the pickguards (so you don't scratch your new investment).

Strumming an acoustic guitar is a great feeling and if you practice and know what you are doing it can sound amazing when you hit a great c chord, or open e chord. Acoustic guitars have been around forever it seems, but they actually have been around since about the 1800's although instruments similar to the guitar have been around for 5000 years. There are many types and styles of acoustic guitars that you can buy although the most common are the 6 string, 12 string models, classical, acoustic-electric, and the acoustic plug in (made popular on MTV with their Unplugged show). Remember that you can buy a guitar in almost any color like black, white, red, silver, wood, yellow, gold, even purple if you like. You also will have to choose what type of fretboard and pickups you want, usually going with mahogany and standard pickups is a safe bet. For a guitar player starting out we would advise buying a basic 6 string acoustic guitar that you can buy for about $100 (Carlos Robelli makes a great model) or check out the listings below.

Buying an Acoustic Guitar:

Do you want to buy an acoustic guitar online or in the store? If you are looking to buy a guitar we hope our reviews and price guide will help make your decision a little easier when it comes time to purchase your next 6 string. Acoustic guitars can cost anywhere between $100 and $5000 new, and you can easily pick up a good used one for about $250. A great website online to learn about acoustic guitars and maybe buy one is guitarcenter.com. Their website offers all the top acoustic guitar brands like Martin, Gibson, Yamaha, Ibanez, Epiphone, Dean, Ovation, Taylor, Takamine, and Breedlove. They also sell left handed guitars, gear, amps, carrying case, pics, strings, and value packages (or combo deals like a guitar, case, extra strings, etc.) which saves you a little money on the whole purchase. There are hundreds of instruments and acoustic guitars for sale at Guitar Center so we just listed the most popular ones: 1. If you want to try buying a used acoustic guitar then check out craigslist.com for the classifieds in your city. Buying a used guitar or any instrument can be tricky, but if you find a good deal you can save a lot of money. A good rule of thumb when it comes to buying used music gear is that you should never pay more than 50 % of the retail value - unless it is a classic, vintage guitar.

Free Acoustic Guitar Lessons Online:

Do you want to take guitar lessons, or better yet acoustic guitar lessons? Most people who start out playing the guitar are intimidated by all the strings and sounds on the instrument, but with the help of the internet you can easily learn to play the acoustic guitar like a pro. Check out guitarlessonworld.com where you can get help with everything you ever wanted to know about playing a guitar like chord structure, stringing and tuning the guitar, the fretboard, power chords, scales, arpeggios, ear training, harmonics, bar chords and even reading tablature (which is key to help you play along with any song). If you want you can buy an instructional video also at their website for $24.99 which covers songwriting, music theory, and ear training. We really like their guitar exercises (strength builder, speed builder, left hand mechanics, and the alternate picking approach) that they offer for free and they are very helpful for any guitarist (beginner or advanced). If you want to take guitar lessons from a teacher in your local city then check out backpage.com where you can find guitar teachers in you area in the musician classifieds section. Most private lessons will cost you about $30 per hour - of course it depends on the teacher and the city you live in as Los Angeles is gonna cost more than Milwaukee. Get practicing and have some fun with your new toy, but don't forget to imagine being on stage while you play in front of adoring fans.

Free Acoustic Guitar Tablature:

Thanks to the internet nowadays musicians and music fans can easily play along with their favorite bands and artists. There are literally thousands of pages online that offer free tablature for people to view, download, and print right at home (how easy is that). You might see your favorite band on MTV or VH 1 and think what notes or chords is that guitar player strumming? Well if you go to ultimate-guitar.com you can find sheet music (tablature) to almost every artist out there. They have U2, Madonna, Panic at the Disco, Metallica, Guns and Roses, Beyonce, Killers, The Doors, Green Day, Kelly Clarkson, Linkin Park, Kenny Chesney, and countless more. The site also offers band news, contests, interviews, helpful tips for playing an acoustic, and new reviews on instruments for sale in the stores like Guitar Center and Sam Ash. Tablature is just the music you hear being written down on paper - guitar tab is written on 6 lines grouped together which reperesents the 6 strings on a guitar (acoustic or electric unless you are playing a 12 string). At first reading music tablature can be difficult and frustrating, but as you get better the notes and charts will start to look familiar and become easier to follow as you play along. For beginning guitar players we recommend starting out with some easy songs from bands that play a simpler style of music (maybe some country artists or Social Distortion) because the less chords and changes in a song, the easier it will be to follow the tablature. Remember that most guitar players you see or hear on tv and the radio have been playing and practicing for years (it was not an overnight success) so be patient and practice, practice, practice. Also remember that some bands you enjoy the sound of might play electric guitar (with bass, drums, keyboards, vocals, etc), but it doesn't mean you can't use an acoustic guitar to play their songs.
