Norton has long been a leader in utility software for the PC. From Norton Backup software, to Norton Anti-Virus, to Norton Utilities, to Norton Personal Firewall, to Norton Internet Security, to Norton SystemWorks, Norton has the tools to keep your PC protected and running optimally. My main complaint against Norton is the annual fee or subscription charge on their products. With normal software, you buy it once and use it as long as you like. With all the Norton products, you buy them once, then have to keep buying them EVERY YEAR in order to keep them operating effectively. I think the forced upgrade is not fair, even though they love it since it brings in a steady revenue stream and evens out their quarterly and annual revenue, a key for keeping Wall St. happy. Keep reading below for a review of Norton SystemWorks..
Norton SystemWorks is the top software program for protecting and optimizing your PC. It combines all the functions of Norton Utilities, Norton Backup, Norton AntiVirus, and Norton Internet Security. It performs a multitude of duties. It protects you from viruses and spyware, defragments your hard drive, it allows you to restore your computer to recover from virus attacks, blocks pop-up ads, system malfunction, or other software failures (GoBack), lets you recover lost files, provides a password manager, comes with Norton Disk Doctor and Norton WinDoctor, fixes registry problems, all with a one button checkup feature. It is the one program you need (ARGHH - and that darn annual fee!) to make sure your computer is safe.
SystemWorks retails for $69. You can buy it direct on Symantec's website with a $20 rebate for $49 (http://www.symantecstore.com). One of the most valuable components of Norton SystemWorks is GoBack (formerly a standalone product called GoBack). This piece of software tracks all the changes made to your system and hard drive, and takes snapshots at various points in time, allowing you to "GoBack" to one of those points and undo all changes since then, in case something bad happens to your computer. Imagine you accidentally open an email virus that takes over your web-browser, hijacks your email, and deletes a bunch of your key system files, all the while disabling your anti-virus software. Hey, no problem. Turn off your computer, restart, hit the key to bring up GoBack when it reboots, then pick a time an hour ago, or a day ago, and your computer is reset to exactly how it was at that point in time. Except for a hard drive crash, your computer becomes essentially bulletproof. That alone is worth at least 2X the price of the software (ask anyone who has trashed their system in a similar fashion -- raise hands, come on..).
SystemWorks also detects, blocks, and removes spyware and adware, one of the biggest problems on the internet today. Many times when you download files they come surreptitiously bundled with other software that you don't want. Norton recognizes and blocks these programs in the first place, so they never get onto your system and never cause problems. Whether it is viruses, keystroke loggers, Trojan horses, worms, or spyware, Norton has you covered, and its automatic monthly definition updates proctects you from the latest nasties out there, without you having to do anything (besides pay Norton..). You can also clean up and delete cookies, cache, and temporary files after surfing the internet. It monitors new software installation and allows you to undo anything that causes a problem. For most people, the insurance policy that comes with a protected computer is more than worth the $50 upfront cost and $30 a year in updates. Think about how much you use your computer for - what is it worth to you to keep it from being trashed tomorrow? This is a little bit mafia-esque, but it is nevertheless true. Money spent on protecting your computer and its contents is money well spent.
You can buy Norton Systemworks and download Norton Systemworks from the website listed above. There is also a slightly more expensive version that includes the shipment of a CD, a good idea for some people. Amazon also sells the packaged version, as do most online software stores.
Norton Anti-Virus
If you don't need all the other backup and system utilities, you can save a few bucks by picking up Norton Anti-Virus for $20-$35. From their website: "Symantec's Norton AntiVirus 2006 is one of the the world’s most trusted antivirus solution. It removes viruses, worms, and Trojan horses automatically - without interrupting your work. Norton AntiVirus 2006 helps protect the activities that you do:

Watch out for sites or emails telling you you can download Norton SystemWorks for free - this is not a free program and requires a standard software purchase and license agreement.
