In reviewing the best payroll software solutions on the web, we came across several that were a cut above the rest. They offered all the features you would need to run the payroll operations at a small business. Easy to access tax tables, ability to track vacation and sick times for each employee, W-2 forms, 1099 forms and 401(K) tracking, etc. These 3 payroll software programs are designed for small businesses that need a quality payroll/accounting solution. They are Quickbooks Pro, Peachtree, and Microsoft Office Accounting. Most retail for $200 but you can find some details if the products are last years version. We found several copies of the 2008 and 2009 Quickbooks available online. Office Depot and other office supply stores carry the latest payroll or accounting software you need. Online is another excellent place to buy one of these programs. Amazon carries most of the leading brands - you can browse the top selling business accounting and payroll software online here.
Best Payroll Software - Quickbooks Pro:
Quickbooks is perhaps the best known small business payroll software on the market. I have been using it for years with my business and certainly it has eliminated the hassle of tasks like payroll checks, federal withholding taxes, payroll deductions, and much more. QuickBooks Pro 2009 is available on Amazon for less than $200. QB Pro is just right for small business owners (the version I bought was good for up to 3 employees). The ability to manage the payroll yourself can save you lots of money compared to outsourcing it to a bank or payroll service company. Print paychecks or use direct deposit and calculate your federal or state payroll taxes in minutes. Quickbooks tracks the payments for me and tells me when they are due. My CPA also uses Quickbooks so it's convenient at the end of the year to email her my file and have my year end taxes dealt with by a professional. You can create and print 1099 tax forms (if you have independent contractors working for you). The ability to import data from Quicken, Microsoft Office Accounting, or Peachtree is invaluable. As a small business owner I don't have time to waste on things like running the payroll and I have to say that Quickbooks does an excellent job.

You can automatically calculate state withholding in all 50 states and prepare payroll in no time at all. Print checks, prepare forms 940, 941, W2, W3, and 944. As someone who is managing payrolls the software is intuitive and very flexible based on your needs. You can find it online at Realtaxtools.com and a FREE TRIAL is available to try out. Handles all payroll and tax issues - the software will automatically fill in federal forms (see below) based on your payroll data:

941: Employer's Quarterly Federal Tax Return
940: Employer's Annual Federal Unemployment (FUTA)
Microsoft Office Accounting:
After going to the Microsoft website we just saw that the Microsoft Office Accounting software will no longer be distributed after November 16, 2009. It still sells for $199.95 until that date and you may be able to find it in stores. We had heard great things about the Microsoft payroll software but unfortunately they will no longer be offering that product. In terms of an alternative, consider Zpay.com or Pensoft.com. The Pensoft payroll software is easy to use and small business owners say it's worth the free trial you can download at their official website. Set up employees, process payroll, print checks or do direct deposit, print out reports, and back up your data. In business since 1983, Pensoft is considered one of the "best value" payroll softwares on the market. They have 6 different versions available - Lite Edition, Standard, Professional, Enterprise, Platinum, and Accounting. The Lite Edition is good for the basic small company with 50 employees or less. Check out the website for all the details.
