What is instant messenging?:Instant messaging is the ability to exchange messages in real time with other people over the Internet. To send and receive instant messages, you need a connection to the Internet and instant messaging software. The instant messaging software enables you to set up a list of contacts that also use the program. Once you set up this list, you can see who is online at a particular moment. If the person you want to talk to is online, you can begin a text, voice, or video conversation with them quickly and easily. If they are not online, you can still send a text message that they will receive when they login or leave them a voicemail.
Which chat service is the best, AOL, MSN, Google or Yahoo?:There is no clear cut best chat software. They all offer chat rooms for teens, kids, adults, and forums for free. It comes down to layout and ease of use. Anyone can chat online, but most have a preference based on friends experiences or whatever network they use. Yahoo, MSN and AOL are starting to offer IM across all the networks so that it doesn't matter which you choose. We prefer Yahoo Messenger only because we use Yahoo email services as well and it makes it convenient. MSN Messenger 7.5 is the latest from Microsoft. It has video conversation, winks, nudges and more. Google Talk was just released in a beta format and is discussed more in depth below.What is Yahoo chat and Where can I get it?:Online chat has been one of the most popular activities on the internet right after email and search. AOL used to dominate with their instant messenging software but late players to the game like Yahoo have started to take over. The new Yahoo Messenger has a voice capability so that you can make PC-to-PC calls worldwide. All you need is a headset, or a microphone and speakers. Just click the call button. You can drag and drop photos into your IM window and share them with friends. Of course, Yahoo chat still offers the traditional free chat rooms, chat forums, and chat web cams. With Yahoo Messenger you can share your Messenger list, share contact details, import and invite contacts. You can search Yahoo from your IM window and get results for both you and your friends to see. You can play classic games right in your IM window against your friends. The features go on and on, but Yahoo Messenger is clearly the #1 chat software these days. Yahoo Messenger is available on their homepage. Just download to your computer and install it.
What is Google Talk?:Google recently came out with a new product called Google Talk. Google Talk enables you to call or send instant messages to your friends for free–anytime, anywhere in the world. Google talk offers the choice to call or email or IM your friends with their software. Talk through your computer and hear your friends as if you were all in the same room. The convenience of having your Gmail contacts pre-loaded into Google Talk lets you instantly talk to your friends. It's in the beta stage, but we assume like all other products that Google has offered over the years, this too will be a huge success. You need a Google Gmail username and password to get started or you can use your mobile phone (US only).
