Atlanta Hawks Players, History, Schedule:The Atlanta Hawks are an NBA franchise based in Georgia. The team really came to national recognition with Dominique Wilkins leading the team to many playoff appearances in the 1980's and 90's. Dominique played with some great players like Reggie Theus, Spud Webb, Kevin Willis and let's not forget Jon Koncack. Those teams were fun to watch and exciting, but the Hawks have a lot of history before the 1980's. The Hawks first joined the NBA in 1946 and today 60 years later they play their home game in Atlanta at Philips Arena. The Hawks were a good team in the 1950's even though they traded their rights to Bob Cousy, and in 1957 they reached the NBA Finals before losing to the Boston Celtics in game seven. In 1968 the Hawks moved from St Louis to Atlanta and shortly after they had some success. Pete Maravich was a crucial part of their teams that made the playoffs during the 60's and 1970's. In 1976 Ted Turner bought the team and made Hubie Brown head coach, although none of this mattered until they drafted Dominique Wilkins in 1982 and became a powerhouse in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta made the playoffs numerous times with Wilkins leading the way and they enjoyed multiple 50 win seasons. The Hawks always seemed to be missing that one additional player or star, and because of that they never could win a title. Dominique was traded for Danny Manning in 1993 which helped put the Hawks at the bottom of the talent pool in the league (they were a below average team for years after Nique left). In 2004 - 05 Atlanta was officially the worst team in the NBA as they won only 13 games. Today Atlanta fans look to Joe Johnson to lead them to the NBA Finals where they could dream about winning a ring (for Atlanta residents and players). The Hawks have a tough schedule this year with the Pistons, Heat, Bulls, 76ers, and Magic all looking good in the east.
