Best Golf Training Aids - Swing Rite - Inside Approach - Speed Stik:

For all of us who have played golf, we have been bombarded at some point with pointers or swing critiques from golf teachers and friends. Nothing like having a fellow 20 handicapper say your swing isn't right. The infomercials are many on the Golf Channel, so you have to weed through the hype and pick something that may actually help. I've seen swing aids, putting dvds, swing harnesses, and specialized golf gloves that all supposedly make you a better player. There are countless DVD's for sale that claim to reduce your handicap by 30% or your money back. Probably for those high handicappers just getting started, it's fairly easy to knock off 10 strokes a round with some simply instructions or pointers, but for the lower handicappers, watching a video or using the "inside approach" is a lot less likely to reduce your handicap. Golf is by nature a hard sport to figure out and repeat. The best results that we have seen are through consistent golf lessons and practice. Sure, some people can pick up a club every few months and shoot in the 80's, but that's not normal. Below is a quick review of the various golf training aids on the market with pricing and the player they are meant for.

SwingRite is a popular swing golf training aid with a "clicking" mechanism which allows you to take practice swings and the club itself will either click before the ball (improper swing) or it will click at the bottom of the swing (12 inches past impact is ok) which means you have a good swing. Seems a little to simple and at $119 maybe too expensive. You can check it out online at SWingrite.com. If you have a slice, then perhaps the "Slice Stopper" (a chemical compound you put on the face of the club) will help. It sells for $49.99 and claims to cure slices and reduce hooks. Again, a lesson runs about $50 per 1/2 hour and I think over the longrun you are better off with a private golf lesson than a quick fix. Vijay Singh promote the Speed Stik which says you will "swing faster, hit farther, and score better" through practice. It sells for $99.95 and is probably meant for the lower handicapper who needs to increase their power. You can save the $100 by swinging 2 clubs instead of 1 when you practice your swing. The Inside Approach is something I've seen marketed on TV by Jack Nicklaus which is a basic looking metal piece with a styrafome extension which promotes a proper swing path. I used something similar to this device to cure my slice and it worked great. As with all golf swing changes, they don't necessarily feel natural the first few swings, but practice makes perfect and the Inside Approach makes sense. I now hit the ball further and straighter (about 30 yards longer with my driver). The Inside Approach golf training aid sells for $59.98.

Medicus - Momentus:

The Medicus golf training aid is a great invention that has a double hinged driver. You can buy it online for $159.80 at Medicus.com. It's a swing training club that will help eliminate slices and hooks. You can practice indoors with it since you don't actually have to hit a golf ball for the product to show you results. There are certain points in the golf swing where the club needs to be in a certain position for the best results and the Medicus (with its hinged technology) will "break" the hinge when you swing the club improperly, both on the takeaway and the downswing through the hitting zone. You get instant feedback which is good, but having tried one of these things, it seemed really hard to keep it from "breaking" during my swing. Not sure everyone needs a PERFECT swing to play golf. The Momentus is another golf swing training device, this one is endorsed by the straightest hitter on the PGA tour, Fred Funk. The website described the uniqueness of the Momentus as "a revolutionary swing trainer that incorporates a patented technology, whereby the clubshaft embodies most of the weight which is evenly distributed throughout the length of the shaft". The Momentus Driver is $99 and the irons are $80. Keep in mind with all these training gimmicks that they are only useful if you actually use them consistently and have professional instructor help your golf swing. As with all things related to golf, there is no instant cure for your swing problems, so don't spend $1000's on golf training aids when you should be putting that into a series of golf lessons from your local professional.

David Leadbetter SwingSetter

Perhaps the best known golf instructor out there is David Leadbetter and he has come out with a new product called the Swingsetter which helps develop your grip, swing plane, release and tempo. They recommend 6 minutes twice a week to get results. The Swingsetter sells for $119.95 and you can buy it online at SWingsetter.com. Having had just 1 true lesson in my life, I was taught the proper grip at a young age which helped alleviate years of improper swinging that I see friends having because their grip on the club is not right. The Swingsetter seems to do a good job of at least getting your hands setup right on the club to begin with which makes the swing follow fairly easily. David Leadbetter teaches pros like Michelle Wie so if we can all acquire her golf swing I'm sure we would be happy. There is an interactive DVD that guides you through the golf swing process.

GolfDust:

On a much less technical side of things, you can purchase things like impact tape or Golf Dust. Golf Dust is applied to the face of your clubs with a spray and after hitting a few golf balls, you can determine just where on the face of your golf clubs you are actually making contact. It sells for $16.45 and has approximately 150 applications of use. You can buy it online at Golfdust.com. .
