Canoe Reviews and Buying Guide:

A canoe can be a fun watercraft to own if you have access to slow flowing streams or rivers or calm lakes. When deciding on what type of canoe you want to buy, you need to consider material (Aluminum, Kevlar, Fiberglass, Royalex and Royalite, Aluminum Alloy, Polyethylene), length (10' or smaller for solo paddlers, 14-15' is great for 2 people, 16-18 feet good for 4 people and gear), stability (initial stability when the canoe is stationary means that secondary or final stability will be low and vice versa), price ($300-$1500), and capacity (mentioned in length above). An aluminum canoe is fairly heavy, but tough and durable. Aluminum alloy canoes are thinner, lighter, and stronger than true aluminum and easier for portage than heavy aluminum. Polyethylene is very flexible, yet durable and the 2 most popular canoes made from polyethylene are the Coleman Ram-X and the Old Town Canoe Crosslink 3 in the Discovery series. Royalex is best the best all around material whether your plans are flat water, to extreme whitewater conditions. Royalite is lightweight, extremely durable, and extremely slippery, it is an ideal material for whitewater running. Kevlar canoes are extremely lightweight and durable and perfect for extreme conditions. Fiberglass canoes are difficult to repair, but are easy to maneuver on flat waters. Lightweight, wood, canvas, cedar strip, and birch bark canoes paddle like a dream but are expensive ($4000 in some cases) and easily damaged and have high maintenance costs.

When looking at the top manufacturers of quality canoes, we start with the Mad River canoes - the Adventure 14 is a great first canoe made of Polyethylene for $499, the Orion tt is a 15' canoe perfect for sportsman at $999, the Horizon 15 rx is made of Royalex and sells for $999 - handles excellent, the Adventure 16 ($599) made of Polyethylene, the Explorer 16 tt ($749) - polyethylene, the Freedom 17 rx ($1249) made of Royalex. The Old Town canoes are my favorite with their classic wood, expedition, hunting & fishing and general family lines of canoes. Their Trapper 11, 13, and 15 canoes are $4200+ and well worth it. The Guide 16, 18, and 20 are wood with canvas canoes that are upwards of $4500. The more reasonable family series consists of the Discovery 158 Superlink3 for $765 and the Stillwater fiberglass canoe (12'-16') that start at $799. The Camper 15 family canoe sells for $1099 and is made of Royalex with an 800 lb capacity. The Expedition series from Old Town Canoes has the Penobscot (16,17,186) all made of Royalex and the cheapest is $1199. The Allagash 164 Polylink3 is only $775 and is a true touring canoe that's versatile and stable. The Osprey 155 is a great hunting or fishing canoe that's easy to handle in and out of the water and is priced at $1239. Coleman has a reputable name in the oudoor gear business and their canoes are top rates with the Journey (made from Ram-X material), the Coleman Odyssey, the Scanoe DLX, and the Vantage. The Coleman Scanoe ($500) seats 2 people, has a double ribbed liner, tri-keeled hull, 53 cubic feet of cargo space, and weighs 130 lbs. Pelican canoes are lightweight and stable with the best sellers being the Pelican Colorado Canoe ($600), Pelican - Dare Devil Canoe ($620), Pelican Bayou Canoe ($900), Pelican Touring Canoe ($679), Pelican Navigator Canoe ($479), and the Pelican Excursion 166 DLX RamXcel Canoe ($829). Wenonah Canoes are designed for 6 categories - touring canoes, recreation canoes, whitewater canoes, performance canoes, expedition canoes, and specialty canoes. The Spirit II 17' is the top touring canoes from We-no-nah and the Fisherman 14' or Kingfisher 16' are our favorites in the recreational class. The Champlain 18' is their top expedition canoe that can handle heavy loads. RECOMMENDED - We suggest shopping online at Amazon.com since they carry all the leading brand names and often have the lowest prices on the Internet. You can browse the top selling canoes on Amazon.com here.

Best Inflatable Canoe:

It seems that today that the inflatable canoes are more popular than the older wooden ones. Top selling brands of canoe inflatables include Sevylor, Stearns, and Advanced Elements. They are lightweight, stable in the water and owner reviews are very positive for almost all types. Most are standard 2 person canoes and some take on more of a kayak shape. You can view the most popular inflatable canoes online here. The best selling Sevylor Inflatable Colorado Canoe comes in two color choices and features two bucket seats and excellent manueverability. The canoe is made with a durable nylon cover over PVC bladders. It's even compatible with a 12 volt trolling motor for fishing purposes. The maximum weight capacity is 500 pounds and you can use canoe or kayak paddles with it. The Colorado Canoe is very popular and well worth a look. RECOMMENDED - We suggest checking out all the top rated Sevylor inflatable canoes here.

Canoe Sale - Used Canoes:

Are you looking for canoes for sale? We found the best site which lists are types of canoes and kayaks by region at Paddling.net/Classifieds/. We saw a 17' Grumman alum. double-end canoe with custom paint, gunwale covers, paddles, vests, and cushions for $575. There was also an Old Town Penobscot 17, green, Royalex, wood cane seats, aluminum gunwales, Grey Owl bent shaft paddles, thwart pack, stored indoors, great shape, asking $625. Another site with a good selection of used canoes was at Redrockstore.com/used.html with Old Town Otca canoes, Grumman canoes, Souris River, Loonworks, Wenonah, and Thompson Bros.. Each canoe is listed with price, material, brief description and owners phone #. Ebay or Craiglist.org are 2 other sites where you can find canoes in your area. Always check for any damage to the canoe that may cause buoyancy issues. If at all possible, get the canoe in the water to test paddle it and make sure it floats ok.
