Cheerleading and CheerleadersCheerleading is normally associated as a support role for sports like football and basketball, but in recent years it has also emerged as a sport in its own right. Cheerleading combines elements of dance, song, rhythm, and gymnastics into routines that can be as simple as a 10 second cheer or as complicated as a 2.5 minute, completely choreographed routine featuring more than a dozen cheerleaders. While largley a woman's sport, cheerleading also attracts many men, especially in competitive cheerleading where men's strength is required for many of the lifting, throwing, and catching maneuvers.
Cheerleader Uniforms - Cheerleading SuppliesPart of being a cheerleader is looking apart -- you need the right cheerleading uniform! For junior and highschools, chances are uniforms will be provided or order forms available for getting your uniform. But there are also a lot of websites that sell cheerleader uniform, perfect if you are in charge of outfitting your squad! Check out Squad-One.com -- they sell uniforms, pom poms, campwear, and cheerleading accessories, like special shoes.Their new generation uniforms sell for about $100 total, which includes skirt, top, and lettering.Their traditional and new age cheerleader uniforms sell for about $80-$85, complete. They offer both adult and youth sizes. You can even build your own custom uniforms from 34 different combinations. You can also get a nice printed catalog from them, or a PDF version to see full color images of what cheerleading products they offer - all available at their website. Our next stop is OmniCheer.com, where you'll find cheerleading skirts, shorts, shirts, uniforms, warm-ups, shoes, sockes, pom poms, and more. Basic pom poms will set you back about $5-$8, while cheerleader uniform sets run about $30-$50. Cheer skirts by themselves run about $18. All around, a great site for picking up your cheerleading gear.Finally, check out DiscountCheerleader.com for all your cheerleading supplies. Uniforms, bows, poms, accessories, even fundraising kits, they have it all. Minimum orders are $40, and they will send out fitter kits and sample uniforms to make sure your squard gets all the right sizes they need. Cheerleading CompetitionsCheerleading has advanced to the point where it is a stand along sport, complete with competitions and championships. The USASF World Cheerleading Championships are held each year in Orlando, FL at Disney World, hostings teams from around the US and internationally as well. While only a few years old (2004) and largely dominated by US teams (they win 85-100% of the medals each year!), it grows in popularity and participation each year. 2008 will be the 5th annual competition. To qualify to enter into the national championships, cheerleading teams must compete and win local and regional events first. Both high schools and college cheer leading teams regularly compete in such events.
