Best Fishing Boats

Fishing is one of the most popular sports hobbies around the US and around the world. While you can get some decent fishing in along the banks of rivers or edges of lakes, and even venture out a little further with the waders on, a fishing boat is what you really need to get access to fishing wherever and whever you want it. Fishing boats come in many shapes and sizes. You can get a small boat with no outboard motor for a few hundred bucks, or a top of the line sport fisher equipped for the deep seas for over $100K. Most people start with a small outboard motor design for lake and river fishing - you'll need a trailer as well to haul your boat to and fro and get it in and out of the water. Below we will check out some of the most popular fishing boat models.

The first step in buying a fishing boat is deciding how you intend to use the boat. Is it strictly for fishing, no water sports like skiing, wakeboarding, etc? Will it be used mainly in shallow water areas? How many people will be fishing at once on it? Will you be doing saltwater fishing or freshwater mainly? Are you interested in speed and performance, or just fishability?

Makers of Fishing Boats

Check out SkeeterBoats.com to view their selection of award-winning bass boats. The Skeeter ZX, SX, and SL series are their most popular models, all combining good looks, powerful motors, and great fishability. The Skeeter SL190 has a bow-mounted fish finder, has an 18.5' length, and a 175ph motor - this boat is perfect for fishing or waterskiing. Their ZX 24 Bay models are built for salt water use, and come with a powerful 250hp Yamaha motor, great for coastal fishing or for maneuvering in tight shallows when needed. ProLineBoats.com makes boats for both fresh and saltwater, but the focus is on saltware. Their Pro-Line Bay Boats can handle both, the little 20 Bay is 20 feet long with an 11" draft, and 200hp of motor power. It has a center console and plenty of storage space, full instrumentation, stainless steel grab rails, 9 rod holders. The Pro-Line Dual Consoles have a swing open windshield and a forward casting deck and large storage compartments. Check out their website to see what else they have to offer.

Check out AquaSport.com for more great fishing boats. In the business for over 40 years, the Explorer and Osprey are their two main consumer fishing boat models. The 225 Explorer is 300hp 22 foot boat with a deep, recessed walkaround. Designed for fishing, these are great boats. The Ospreys are center console boats, and the big 255 Osprey will set you back around $70K, depending on options. Trophy is another big fishing boat manufacturer (TrophyFishing.com), making center consoles, walk arounds, and bay boats. The Trophy 1901 Bay Pro is a shallow running bay boat with raised fore and aft fishing platforms, and a covered center console. For something a little bigger, check out the Trophy 2302 Walkaround designed for deep water fishing with a big-water hull and 23 feet in length.

Buying a Fishing Boat

How much does a fishing boat cost? If you are buying a new fishing boat, prices will depend upon the type and size of boat you are buying. TrackerBoats.com, for example, on their website list local dealer pricing on their fishing boats. A 2006 TRACKER Pro Crappie 175 (25 EL FourStroke EFI Motor and Trailer) retails for $11,500 -- good for bass fishing as well, sits low in the water. The 2006 TRACKER Avalanche 18 DC has 115HP, dual consoles, and is a high performance bass boat - $23K. A 2006 TRACKER Tournament V-18 with a 90hp motor and trailer is $19K, with a deep V hull and traditional bass boat layout. It has a fore and aft seating platform, single console. Yuo can of course find a cheaper fishing boat, like the GRIZZLY 1754 CC All-Welded Jon - $5800. It has a mod V hull made from Heavy Gauge 5052 Marine Aluminum Alloy, aerated live well, 2 storage compartments, and handles for lifting the boat. It has 2 movable, fold-down fishing seats, and aluminum flooring. The all weld design means no leaks or gaps. Tracker also makes fishing boats with no motors, like the Topper 1032. For just $500, this nice little fishing boat has a flat bottom hull design for easy use in shallow water, a tough aluminum alloy hull, with additional foam flotation. The interior features 2 bench seats, unpadded, so bring your own cushions. It is 10 feet long and weighs 80 lbs, capable of holding 2 people with a total weight of 314lbs.

You can also save a lot of money by buying a used fishing boat. Boat-World.com has a large listing of used and new fishing boats around the US. Their fishing boats are broken down by category: angler fishing, bay boat, center console, convertible, flats boat, hardtop, off shore, pilot house, t-top, bass boat, cuddy cabin, fly bridge, jon boat, sports fisher. Pick up a used 2005 Quintrex 140 Wide Body Dory for just $2500 (14 foot boat, aluminum hull, made for sea water). Or a nice 2004 Sea Pro 180 Center Console for $16K, 115hp Yamaha motor, Garmin chartplotter and sounder, fiberglass hull. A 2006 Angler 204FX LE, brand new, with a 150hp motor, 20 foot length, $24K. Ebay lists fishing boats of various types - bass fishing boats, inshore saltwater, offshore saltwater, and other freshwater boats. Pick up a 1993 Flats Master Scooter 13' fishing boat for $3900, or a 1980 Boston Whaler Montauk with 90 Yamaha for $7900, or a 1997 Hydra-sports 185R Bass Boat for $11K, or a 2001 Wellcraft 230 Coastal Tournament twin 150hp for $33K.
