March Madness - NCAA Basketball Tournament:

Each year thousands of screaming fans pack gyms across America to watch college basketball enjoy its "March Madness" tournament that crowns the #1 team in NCAA basketball. March Madness has slowly gained in popularity and the TV networks (ESPN & CBS) have turned it into a real money maker. For 2 weeks at the end of March and into early April, college kids and adults of all ages are thrilled, amazed and often disappointed as their team gets knocked out of the tournament one by one. The tournament starts with 64 teams all seeded from #1 to #16 in four different brackets (South, West, East, North) and it's a single elimination tournament in which any team can beat any team on a given day which adds to the overall atmosphere and excitement. You can download a 2009 Men's Bracket in PDF format HERE. This year Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan will be host to the Final Four. The build up throughout the 2 weeks is what makes this event so special and office pools are rampant as alumni from top schools make their picks and hope for the best.

Back when I was in high school I would take a day or 2 off to watch the first few days of the tournament at home with friends. If you happen to live in an area where the games will be played, try to get tickets so you can watch the players live. If you can get to the Sweet Sixteen (final 16 teams) that is doing pretty well, of course the Final Four or Championship game is the ultimate. In past years there have been many upsets early on in the tournament and even the best teams in any given year know that they could easily be knocked out of the tournament if they don't play well. Players like Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Kareem Abdul Jabbar all made it to the championship game. One of the most memorable finals was between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird when Michigan State played Indiana St in the 1979 season. At the time we knew the 2 guys were special players, but little did we know that the 2 would go on to face off in the NBA Finals for many years after that. March Madness is a great time for unknown players to be in the national spotlight and shine for a few weeks and gain recognition in markets they would never have been exposed to. The tournament is kind of like "David vs Goliath" in that the underdogs are many but the crowds are always looking for an upset and see the little guy win. In 1983 North Carolina State (Jimmy Valvanos team) beat the Houston team as a gigantic upset and 2 years later in 1985 the Villanova team beat the Georgetown Hoyas with amazingly accurate shooting for the entire game. College sports have always been more exciting than almost any professional sports because the atmosphere is crazy and students at colleges and universities in the actual tournament get caught up in the March Madness "fever". Some of the most dominate schools in the tournaments history are UCLA (9 Championships in 12 years), Duke, Indiana, North Carolina, Connecticut, Kentucky, and Kansas.

Tournament Websites:

If you want information on teams, schedules, scores, highlights, videos, ... you name it, then go to the NCAA Men's Basketball homepage HERE. This the tournaments homepage and the best place to find what you want with team histories, player profiles, past stats, and predictions by top analyst. The CBS Sportsline college basketball website is HERE. Get exclusive features on projecting the field, the top 25 breakdown, player rankings, and March Madness on Demand. ESPN has another excellent site dedicated to tracking all the teams and rankings in men's college basketball HERE.

Yahoo Brackets - Make Your Own Picks!:

One of the best websites to follow the tournament on is located HERE. It's the Yahoo Tournament Pick'Em page where you can not only pick your favorite teams and any upset you may be predicting, you can also see how you are doing versus millions of other entrants. There is no fee to play, just signup online and watch the results trickle in. All the picks are done online with drop down menus and you can need to have you selections made before the tournament deadline. Check the site in early March each year for the latest details. Get your friends/family/co-workers to sign up at Yahoo and see who knows the most when it comes to choosing college basketball teams in the NCAA Tournament.

March Madness Tickets:

First things first, tickets are not easy to get if you wait too long. If you are a student at any school that is in the tournament you do get a chance at tickets before anyone else through your school. Otherwise, you will be left to buy tickets from Ticketmaster.com or from ticket sites like StubHub.com. Ebay and Craigslist.org may also be a good source for purchasing scalped tickets online. Go to the tournament websites listed above so you can check out where the 1st round, 2nd round, Regionals, Final Four & Championship will be played so you can determine if it's possible to go.
