Each year 30 NBA teams fight out the regular season and playoffs to get an opportunity at the NBA finals. The NBA Finals happens each year in the month of June as the Eastern Conference and Western Conference champions face off. The NBA has gained plenty of fan support over the last 2 decades with players like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Shaq, Kobe Bryant, and Tim Duncan all winning multiple championships along the way. The league has never lacked talent and exciting play from the young guns. Todays current stars include guys like LeBron James, Chris Paul, Kevin Garnett, and Tracy McGrady. Only one team can be crowned the winner each year, all the rest are relegated to 2nd best or worse. The NBA season is long with pre-season games starting in October, then the regular season from November to April, and finally the playoffs which extend into June.
The Boston Celtics dominated the 1960's with 9 titles (an amazing feat), then 1970's were a real toss up with 8 different teams winning titles. In the 1980's we saw the Los Angeles Lakers dominate the decade with teams that included Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Earvin (Magic) Johnson, James Worthy, Byron Scott, Kurt Rambis, Jamaal Wilkes, Bob McAdoo, Michael Cooper and many others. The Celtics did their best with Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish, Danny Ainge and Dennis Johnson to win 3 titles in the 80's. A guy name Michael Jordan came along in the 1990s' and showed everyone what it was like to play with never before seen athleticism and mental ability. Jordan led the Bulls to 3 straight finals championships twice in the 90's which is unheard in the modern era of basketball. Shaquille O'Neal was able to 3-peat with the Lakers from 1999-2001 with the help of young Kobe Bryant. This year looks like it could be New Orleans Hornets with Chris Paul winning the whole thing. It's a long season with 82 regular season games and staying healthy is always a concern as the playoffs approach. Winning your first and second round series in the shortest amount of time is still the best way to go although some experts say that too much off-time in the postseason is not good. Veteran teams need all the rest they can get to save their legs for the finals. The finals games are played in a 2-3-2 format with the team having the best regular season record getting the first 2 games at home regardless of who was a higher seed in the playoffs.
Home Court Advantage:
No other sport has so many plays that are determined by the referees calling fouls or letting "them play". The NBA has become a very physical league with players getting bigger and stronger over the years. It's hard for referees to call every foul that occurs or else that would slow up play immensely. Therefore, it's a fine line between getting fouled and playing through the rough play. That's why home court advantage is so huge when it comes to the NBA Finals. Referees are always partial towards the home team with loose balls, drives to the hoop, and blocking/charging calls. There's no doubt that the home team gets its fair share of calls going their way and so the road team has to persevere through some tough calls and find a way to mentally concentrate at the task at hand. Home crowds can be very noisy and you will see the coach of the away team try to call strategic time-outs to stop the flow of play when the other team and crowd get things rolling. It's not always the case, but the vast majority of the time the team with the best record and home court advantage will win the NBA finals. The regular season is very important for the best teams in the league as they jockey for position and try to gain the ultimate advantage with home court. In the 2008 playoffs, we have seen home court dominate the 2nd round with only a few games being won on the road. Things will surely remain tough as the finals start in the new few weeks. The one thing that has swung against the team with the best record heading into the finals, with the new format (since 1985) of a 2-3-2 series, if you lose one of the first 2 at home you could be looking at a quick series and never returning home to defend your home court. It used to be 2-2-1-1-1 and that way you could always get back home for game 5 if needed.

Tickets to the NBA Finals:
Unlike the Superbowl, where the final game between the top NFL teams is played at a neutral site, the NBA Finals bring home court into the picture. IF you are season ticket holder for your favorite team and they make it to the finals, you are sitting pretty since you will have first dibbs at the tickets. Of course scalpers and ticket reseller sites make a killing on selling tickets as well, but at least you have a fighting chance. It definitely helps to keep your season tickets with an NBA team even as they go through rough years if you are interested in ever getting the chance at NBA Finals tickets. Otherwise, you are left up to lottery systems, ticket resellers, and scalpers on Ebay and other similar sites.
