New York Knicks Players, History:Ever since The New York Knicks came into the BAA in 1946 they have been a team to watch. The Knicks are one of only 2 teams (the other is Boston Celtics) who are still in their original city after joining the NBA in 1949. New York would go on to have some really good teams in the 50's, but it just seemed like they never had enough talent to beat the Lakers or Philadelphia in big games. The Knicks drafted Willis Reed in 1965 and he went on to be named NBA Rookie of the Year. In the 1960's it was Phil Jackson and Walt Frazier who would lead the Knicks to a new level. In 1969 New York would change forever as the Knicks went on to win the NBA Finals by beating the Los Angeles Lakers (with Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain). The 70's brought some more good times to the Knicks as they won the NBA Title again in 72-73 with the help of their new star Earl Monroe. The Knicks would find the rest of the decade not so sweet, as New York struggled with being an average team with all-star players. 1984 would bring Bernard King to the Knicks in a trade that would go down as a steal for New York. King would lead the NBA in scoring before he had a career threatening knee injury in 1985 that would end up being to hard to ever come back from. In 1985 the Knicks drafted Patrick Ewing in the first ever lottery draft and surrounded him with talent (Mark Jackson, Charles Oakley, Charles Smith) who were expected to help Ewing win a title. New York had some great team in the late 80's, but Michael Jordan was in the NBA during that time, a big reason the Knicks just never had enough talent to win it all. In the 1990's the Knicks added some great players like Larry Johnson and John Starks to their roster. Unfortunately for New York, even in 1994 when Michael Jordan was playing baseball they still lost in the finals to Houston. The Knicks hoped when they traded for Stephon Marbury that he would be a leader and change, neither of which would happen. In recent years the Knicks have been counting on young stars like Channing Frye to take them back to the playoffs. This year Isiah Thomas will coach the Knicks to what many fans believe will be a return to the playoffs in 2007.
