One of golfs 4 majors is called the PGA Championship and this year the tournament will be held (August 10-16) at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. The 2009 PGA Championship will be the 91st and it will be the last major tournament of 2009 for golf. Tiger Woods has won the PGA a few times, but the courses are always tough and they require the utmost concentration for the entire 4 days of the event. The PGA of America was founded in 1916 and they hand out awards each year like PGA Player of the Year and the Vardon Trophy for the player with the lowest adjusted scoring average. They have already picked out next years site for the 2010 PGA Championships at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin from August 9-15. Other top venues in recent years have included Hazeltine (2002), Valhalla (2000), Medinah (1999), Winged Foot (1997), and Cherry Hills.
Part of the mestique of this tournament is that it's held at some of the classic golf courses around America that can still challenge professional golfers of today. With enough trees, rough, and tight fairways, even the longest or most accurate drivers of the ball will find them demanding. The PGA sets up courses very similar to the USGA with thick rough along the fairways and around the greens. Players face lightning fast greens with hard to find pin positions come Sunday making comebacks nearly impossible unless of course the leader falls prey to the course. Amateurs that watch any of golfs 4 majors (The Master, US Open, British Open, PGA Championship) get to see even the best players in the world struggle through their rounds and have to grind just to make pars. Forget about birdies on some of these courses. The youngest PGA Champion was Gene Sarazen back in 1922 at just 20 years, 5 months, and 22 days. The most victories is a title shared by Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus at 5 each. You can find all the details on records and player histories at PGA.com. You can also shop online at their website for PGA Championship memorabilia including hats, jackets, balls, clubs, etc. Although Tiger Woods dominates golf at this time, any player can win on any given day and that is what makes golf exciting as the scoreboard changes by the second and players feel the pressure of coming down the back 9 on a Sunday in a major championship. If you have never been, try to get tickets (see below) and enjoy the 4 day event watching the top professional golfers slug it out. The PGA Championship is much like any other 72 hole event with a cut after 2 days and the best golfer looking to pocket about $1 million.
PGA Championship Tickets:
How about finding tickets to the PGA Championship? Tickets for the 2009 PGA Championship are on sale now and you can get them online HERE. There is a printable order form (get it HERE) or you can order tickets online. They are roughly $30 for the practice daily grounds ticket. Saturday and Sunday tickets are over $100 for each day, but well worth the price. There are some ticket brokers like Stubhub.com that offer golf tickets at a premium over their face value. Tickets for the 2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits will be available starting in the summer of 2009 HERE. You can always try to get a package deal with hotels, tickets, airfare through some travel or hotel sights. Ebay is another alternative to finding PGA tickets as there are dozens of listings for all the major tournaments each year. Tickets are not the biggest expenses at all (unless you live near the tournament site), so don't get caught up in paying $120 for a one day pass considering you will probably be paying $200/night for lodging and $400+ for airfare.
Location & Hotels:
Eventhough the PGA Championship is held at a different location each year, the PGA.com website does an excellent job of helping you find things to do in the area of the event. They provide links to hotels in the area, airports, airlines, and other entertainment possibilities while you are in town. This year the event is in Tulsa, Oklahoma so they have conveniently setup a link that takes you to Visittulsa.com for a great "welcome to Tulsa" website with links to all sorts of resources. We recommend booking early with any hotel in the tournament vicinity as they do sell out quite often when golf majors come through town. People tend to plan these types of golf vacations or packages years in advance, so keep that in mind if you think you can procrastinate and still buy tickets, etc..
TV Coverage - Online Stats:
If you can't fly to the tournament or get tickets to the event, you can always watch the golf action unfold on television. Usually cable stations like TNT or ESPN will carry these events at least on Thursday and Friday. The final 2 rounds will be aired on a major network (NBC, CBS, or ABC) on Saturday and Sunday so that everyone can see them. Like the US Open and The Masters, you can also follow all the live scoring online.
PGA Championship Winners:
The PGA Championship in the last decade has been one of the most exciting golf tournaments of the year with players like David Toms, Tiger Woods, and Vijay Singh all winning. Even less heralded players like Shaun Micheel, Rich Beem, Mark Brooks, and Jeff Sluman have pulled out victories in the PGA golf championship. One of the favorites amongst golf fans was the 1999 duel between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia on the famed course of Medinah. woods eventually prevailed, but the world was introduced to the young star from Spain (Sergio Garcia).
