The Phoenix Suns have been around since 1968 and it's only been in the last decade that they have been a consistent team. Phoenix has always had talent and decent coaching to work with, but in the NBA sometimes that is not enough. If you were old enough to watch the NBA in 1975 you would remember the Suns making it all the way to the NBA Finals. It was a shock for basketball fans to see Phoenix playing for the championship, but a good start for a young franchise who was trying to make a mark. In the 1980's the Suns had some really good basketball teams and were able to make the playoffs with emerging stars like Tom Chambers and Kevin Johnson leading the way. The 1980's were dominated by the LA Lakers (with Magic Johnson) and Phoenix was never able to get past them in the playoffs even though they matched up well with LA. In June of 1993 all the years of disappointment came to an end for Suns fans as they watched Phoenix play in the NBA Finals and almost bring home the title. In the end Phoenix would lose to the Chicago Bulls (led by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen) in the NBA Finals and realize just how good the Bulls really were. Charles Barkley was the leader during the early 90's for Phoenix and he carried them to many victories. In the late 90's Phoenix added Jason Kidd and Tom Gugliotta but once again they fell far short of any real title hopes. In 2000 The Suns started to rebuild and make some major moves. Phoenix fans hoped that Penny Hardaway would be good enough to lead the team, unfortunately with non stop injuries and bad luck the Suns never quite made the leap to being a great team. In 2005, with Steve Nash at point guard (the current NBA MVP) Phoenix has regained their status as a contender and with young talent around like Shawn Marion, Joe Johnson, and Amare Stoudemire they will be a team to watch. This year Phoenix is also looking for Marcus Banks, Leandro Barbosa, Raja Bell, Boris Diaw, and Kurt Thomas to lead Phoenix back to the playoffs and hopefully back to the finals in June. The 2005 season was good for Phoenix and Suns fans, but they played Dallas in the playoffs and the Mavericks were to much with Dirk Nowitzki leading the way. 2006 looks to be an exciting season for Phoenix as they will battle many great players again like Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, and Tracy Mcgrady before they can even think about the playoffs.
