Salmon Fishing:

Salmon is one of the most popular types of fish to both catch and eat. Salmon are born in fresh water and migrate to the ocean before returning (spawning) to fresh water to reproduce. Salmon live in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and in the Great Lakes and other land locked lakes. The variety of salmon is biggest in the Pacific Ocean with sockeye salmon, King Salmon (Chinook salmon), pink salmon, Coho salmon and Cherry Salmon. Salmon remains a popular food in restaurants and in homes since it's healthy with protein and Omega-3 fatty acids. You can buy either farm raised Salmon or wild salmon, but wild salmon show less dioxins and more Omega-3 content than farmed salmon. Some of the best Salmon fishing in the world is located in either British Columbia, Canada or in certain parts of Alaska. Both areas offer excellent salmon fishing vacation packages where you get fitted with your own fishing rod and reel and are expected to haul in plenty of wild salmon before the trip is done. Michigan and Oregon are 2 other spots where the seasonal salmon fishing is spectacular and guided fishing trips are well worth the money.

If you want the best, then we suggest heading up north to Alaska. Soldotnalodge.com/fishing.htm is a picturesque lodge that offers salmon fishing on the famous Kenai River. Depending on the time of year, you can catch Kenai Kings, Sockeye salmon, Silver salmon, or Pink salmon. Professional guides take you to the hot spots on the river and help you land the "big ones". Alaskasportsden.com is another website that features salmon fishing packages on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. They will set you up with all the equipment and knowledge starting at $1400. Fishing has always been big business in Alaska commercially, but as access has improved to more areas, the public can now enjoy the beautiful wilderness and catch their own salmon. Whatever you catch is cleans and stored properly before shipping to your home. As we mentioned earlier, salmon live in the Great Lakes and Michigan is home to some fine salmon fishing establishments like Sea Hawk Charters at Fishseahawk.com or Captain Hook Charters at Capthooksportfishing.com. For the best salmon fishing in Michigan, go to the famous AuSable River right near Lake Huron's shoreline. Oscoda is northeast Michigan's premier fishing destination. Moving westward back into Oregon you will find plenty of top salmon fishing spots. Nwfish.com is a good website to start with for Oregon salmon guides. Get information on fishing trips, charters, and tours of the Columbia River or Oregon's coastal rivers. In BC Canada, the salmon fishing is top rate and a friend of mine recently did a chartered salmon fishing trip up there with his father. They caught plenty of Coho salmon and compared the conditions to those found in Alaska. To get more information on salmon fishing in British Columbia, go to Bctravel.com/fishing/.

Smoked Salmon:

If you do go on a salmon fishing excursion and catch a lot of salmon, you can always have the salmon smoked and shipped later. Smoked salmon is delicious and stays good for a long time. I have ordered smoked salmon off the Internet for years now as Christmas gifts to family members. Smoked-fish is a great website for buying smoked wild salmon from Alaska. You can get a 1/4 lb of maple smoked Sockeye fillet for $12.95 or 1/2 pound of hot smoked Chinook (King) salmon for $22.95. Their selection is huge and the gift boxes are their specialty. Justsmokedsalmon.com is another online website dedicated to shipping the finest in smoked salmon products. They are located in the Pacific Northwest (Washington) and offer traditional smoked salmon, teriyaki jerky, sampler packs ($19.95), canned red King smoked salmon ($13), canned smoked salmon pate ($5), canned Sockeye smoked salmon ($9), alder smoked salmon lox ($24), and there are salmon planks for cooking. Smoking salmon at home is possible, if you follow some basic rules/guidelines, which are spelled out at Kasilofseafoods.com/Smoking.htm.

Salmon Recipes:

Very few fish offer the variety in ways to cook and prepare a salmon. The most popular way to cook salmon is to grill it. Baked salmon is another cooking method along with poached salmon. Grilling (barbecue) salmon is what I prefer and I usually marinade the salmon with teriyaki sauce or barbecue sauce for the best flavor. I've found that when cooking certain salmon (wild, farm raised, etc) the coloring can be quite different and the texture varies considerably. I love salmon that just flakes right off, but recently some of the farm raised salmon I had been buying was tougher and not flaky. The largest selection of salmon recipes we found online was at Thesalmons.org/lynn/salmon-recipes.html. Choose from simple baked salmon, baked stuffed salmon, salmon patties, salmon cakes, smoked salmon pate, sesame salmon with wasabi sauce or salmon steaks. The list goes on and on with detailed instructions on how to cook whatever method you choose. They have appetizers, soups, pastas and side dishes along with main courses.
