The Toronto Raptors were founded in 1995 and are currently the only NBA team in Canada. Isiah Thomas was named the GM in 1995 as the Raptors approached their 1st ever expansion draft. Isiah and the Raptors chose to build the franchise around Damon Stoudamire who played his college ball at Arizona. Most fans in Toronto were not happy about the pick, but in the end Stoudamire would win rookie of the year and silence his basketball critics. There were a lot of rumors and trade ideas being thrown around Toronto during this time, however Stoudamire would remain a Raptor until he was traded to Portland in 1998. 1996 saw Marcus Camby join the team and Tracy Mcgrady would also become a Raptor shortly after. Toronto won only 13 games in 1997, a true low point for any professional basketball team. The following year would bring some big news to Toronto as the Raptors acquired Vince Carter via a trade with Golden State Warriors. A great website for Raptor news and history is the official nba site at nba.com/raptors. As the 90's came to a close the Raptors brought in Charles Oakley to provide some veteran leadership on the court. Unfortunately for the Raptors (and their fans) the new players like Oakley and Kevin Willis could not even win 40 games. The 1999 season was a very important one in Toronto, the Raptors made the playoffs for the first time and they moved to the Air Canada Centre. Toronto has had some ups and downs since then as they only won 33 games in 2003. Despite numerous line-up and coaching changes the Raptors seem like they might make 2006 their year. With Jalen Rose and Donyell Marshall providing leadership for the younger players it appears Toronto might find themselves back in the playoffs. The Raptors are in for a long season no matter what as they will face teams like Detroit, Miami, and New York on a nightly basis in the eastern conference.
Toronto Raptors Dance Pak, Pictures:
The Toronto Raptors have a beautiful group of girls who will be the Raptors Dance Pak for 2006-2007. The NBA has become a big business and one way for an NBA team to be profitable is to get more fans to the home games. The Raptors Dance Pak is going to help bring in the fans for Toronto (and they will not be dissapointed by the girls). There are 16 girls (Carla, Samantha and Bianca will be crowd favorites) who made the Dance Pak squad this year, for more information and photos check out nba.com/raptors/game_experience/0607dancepak.html.
Canada might not have been known for flashy costumes and big hair, but the Raptors Dance Pak should help change all of that. Stay tuned for an exciting 2006-2007 year for Toronto and the Dance Pak.
Where can I find Toronto Raptors Tickets, Jerseys, Schedule, and Merchandise?:
If you are a big Raptors fan and want to buy Toronto tickets online then try stubhub.com. There are a lot of websites that sell tickets for sporting events, but stubhub.com always has good tickets to nba games. A really good seat for a Raptors game will cost you $100, or if you are on a tighter budget you can sit in the bargain seats for only $15 a ticket. If you are looking for the Raptors home schedule in 2006 just go to nba.com/raptors for game times. If you are shopping for Raptors merchandise or a Toronto Jersey then stop by ebay.com where you will find hats, shirts, autographed items, and even shoes for sale. Ebay is a nice website to buy apparel on because you bid on the item you want to buy (somtimes you can get a really good deal on your favorite item). An authentic NBA jersey will run you about $45-$70 depending on the jersey # you want - the more famous the player usually the more $ his jersey will cost.
Toronto Raptors Fansites, Wallpaper:
The Raptors have only been around for 11 years as an NBA team, so we were surprised to find some really good fansites. A fantastic website for Raptors fans is raptorscity.com where you can find photos, injury updates, trade talk and Raptor news. If you are looking for Raptors wallpapers try online at nba.com/raptors/news/raptors_wallpaper.html. They have a decent selection of players (even some classic shots with Carter, Stoudamire) and some cool designs. Raptors fans definitely have their favorite players, which is why some fansites are made more for the individual player rather than the whole team. Vince Carter was a huge fan favorite when he played in Toronto (before going to the Nets) and when the Nets come to town Vince still gets a standing ovation. Toronto has been in the playoffs only once, but go to a Raptors home game and you will feel a city hungry for basketball.
