US Open Golf Tournament:

The US Open Golf tournament is an event run by the USGA (United States Golf Association) and each year the championship is moved from one golf course to another. This year Bethpage State Park will hold the event from June 15-21 2009. Bethpage Black is where Tiger Woods won back in 2002 to take the title. All the top ranked golfers from around the world come to play these "Majors" as they are called. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Adam Scott, and Vijay Singh will lead the field. The US Open of golf is run like any other tournament with 2 days of 18 holes of golf followed by a cut where about half the field is left to battle it out over the weekend. An eventual winner is crowned on Sunday unless there is a tie and then the players come back for a complete round of 18 holes on Monday to settle it (like what happened this last year at Torrey Pines with Rocco Mediate and Tiger). The US Open started back in 1895 when Horace Rawlins won the first golf tournament in Newport. From 1942-1945 there was no championship held due to World War II. A select group of men have won the US Open Golf Championship and only certain courses are even considered for the event.

The USGA sets up the course to their specifications and in recent years like at Shinnecock Hill Golf Course in 2004, the players complained about the conditions being too difficult. It is the USGA's job to make the course tough, but fair and sometimes they go over the top making the greens to hard and putting nearly impossible. Retief Goosen was able to tame Shinnecock on that final Sunday, but several players shot over 80 and were embarrassed. The upcoming US Opens will be 2009 Bethpage State Park (Black Course) from June 15-21 in Farmingdale, NY. In 2010, Pebble Beach Golf Links will host the event in Pebble Beach, California from June 14-20. 2011 the US Open will be held at Congressional Country Club from June 13-19 and the Olympic Club in San Francisco will be the site in 2012 from June 11-17. The US Open consistently is slated for Father's Day weekend and always has sentimental winners. There are 2 sites online where you can go for more information, USopen.com and USGA.org. For your best chance at tickets (see below), you are definitely advised to join the USGA and get on their mailing list for tickets each year. The prize money for this event has skyrocketed with the success of the PGA Tour as well as having Tiger Woods in the field year after year. Tiger has almost single-handedly doubled all the purses in golf over the last decade or so and they continue to go higher with several tournaments handing out over $1 million to the winner. In your lifetime try to get out to one of the US Open golf tournaments and enjoy a round of golf with the greatest players in the world.

US Open Golf Tickets:

Are you looking for US Open golf tickets to the 2009 or 2010 events? The USGA is the site you want to visit for details on ordering and applying. Yes, you need to apply for the tickets if you are a USGA member and you will have an opportunity to purchase tickets through their lottery system. Go to USGA.org/tickets to signup online and get an order form. The 2009 event at Bethpage is pretty much sold out through traditional sources, but you can always find tickets through ticket brokers or online at Ebay.com. For the 2010 US Open being held at Pebble Beach, you can apply online or through the mail. They limit one application per individual (or address) and with the event having sold out for 20 years straight, it's not easy getting tickets. You can not order tickets via the telephone or via fax as they send out written confirmation to you once your order has been processed. Practice round tickets are about $35 while the actual event tickets are about $100. An alternative source for US Open golf tickets is online at Golftickets.net. They sell golf tickets at a premium and most tickets are marked up at least 20% and in some cases almost 100% from their face value. Join the USGA for the best chance at tickets and then go with a package tour if you have to get hotels and tickets combined. The great thing about going to a golf tournament is that you can pretty much choose which hole or holes you want to watch as there are bleachers at many of the holes. Walking around the course is difficult since there are only a few places to cross the fairways and the crowds can be huge.

Location & Hotels:

The location changes each year for the US Open Golf tournament, so all we can say is book early and get your application in for tickets well in advance. This year the event is in Farmingdale, New York and so you can check out lodging and hotels online at Expedia.com. Next year the US Open will be held in California (Pebble Beach/Monterey area), so get a head start and go online to Expedia or Travelocity and book a hotel room now if you plan on attending the golf tournament. House rentals are a smart idea too if you have more than a few people in your party. Many homeowners leave for a week or so to let visitors rent their house/condo while the tournament is going. We recommend using VRBO.com (Vacation Rental by Owner) for your lodging needs.

US Open Golf TV Coverage:

For TV coverage, you will find ESPN doing much of the previews and early rounds on their cable network and then it's usually NBC doing the weekend coverage. Saturday and Sunday include almost 7 hours of golf as rounds 3 and 4 are shown on TV from start to finish for the leaders. If the tournament needs playoff, it will be played on Monday in an entire 18 hole match. For scores and stats on the players involved, you can go online to follow the tournament even if you aren't near a TV. Get up to date leaderboards, player stories, comments, and analyst feedback. The Golf Channel has just recently taken over some of the broadcasting rights for the PGA Tour so make sure you have that channel if you want to watch the golf.

US Open Golf Winners/Champions:

You would expect only the best golfers to have won an event like the US Open with wicked fast greens, deep rough, and narrow fairways. Not always is it the straighest hitter off the tee that wins these events as we can see from the list below of past champions. Tiger Woods is always the favorite when he enters an event, but the US Open has certainly not been that kind to even Mr. Woods through the years.
  • Tiger Woods (3 Titles) 2000, 2002, 2008
  • Ernie Els (2 Titles) 1994, 1997
  • Jack Nicklaus (4 Titles) 1962, 1967, 1972, 1980
  • Payne Stewart (2 Titles) 1991, 1999
  • Lee Janzen (2 Titles) 1993, 1998
  • Retief Goosen (2 Titles) 2001, 2004
  • Curtis Strange (3 Titles) 1988-89
  • Hale Irwin (3 Titles) 1974, 1979, 1990
  • Tom Watson (1 Titles) 1982
  • Lee Trevino (3 Titles) 1968, 1971
  • John Miller (1 Titles) 1973
  • Andy North (2 Titles) 1978, 1985
  • Arnold Palmer (1 Titles) 1960
  • Bill Casper Jr. (2 Titles) 1959, 1966
  • Ben Hogan (4 Titles) 1948, 1950-51, 1953
