Amsterdam is the capital city of The Netherlands, also known as Holland. Lying along the Amstel River, Amsterdam is as famous for its canals as it is for its redlight district. The concentric semi-circle canals give Amsterdam its unique feel and atmosphere, with barges and passenger ferries moving along the waterways. Many tourists visit the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House, but de Wallen (redlight district) is also a famous draw, bringing in old and young visitors alike from all over Europe and around the globe. Almost 3/4 of a million people call Amsterdam home, and the non-stop tourist traffic makes it feel even busier and more crowded. There are plenty of good lodging choices in Amsterdam, ranging from quaint bed and breakfasts in historic buildings to modern hotel chains. Hotel listings and reviews are below:

The airport (Amsterdam Schiphol) is about 20 minutes from the city center by train. The direct train ride costs just under 4 euros and takes 15-20 minutes. The Central Station train depot sits right in the middle of the old town center.
Google Maps is a good source for Amsterdam maps. It has added some new features to the world of online travel maps - you can drag the map around on your screen to scroll, rather than waiting for the screen to redraw each time you want to move a little to the left or right. Plus, you can overlay the road maps over actual satellite photos (Google Earth) to see buildings, landmarks, actual highway interchanges, etc. Very cool.
