Reviews: Best Atlantic City Hotels - Atlantic City Vacation
Before the rise of Las Vegas, Atlantic City was THE big gambling mecca in the US, though long known as a seaside resort as well with its popular boardwalk and beaches. The actual city part of Atlantic City is nothing spectacular. I lived in New Jersey for a few years in the early 90s, and no stay in the Garden State is complete without a trip to AC. But I must say, for me, once was enough, while I have been to Las Vegas many times since. Anyways, if you are going to Atlantic City for business travel or pleasure, chance are you will need a place to stay. You have a choice between the big casino hotels and the smaller operators -- whichever you choose, we recommend staying as close to the boardwalk and waterfront area as possible. If you are arriving from the Atlantic City airport or surrounding areas (ie, from Philly or NYC), chance are you will approach via the Atlantic City Expressway, which shoots out to Philadelphia, connecting conveniently with the Garden State Parkway (GSP) along the way for easy access either north or south into Jersey.
The actual layout of the city along the ocean runs almost west to east, angling slightly north. The boardwalk itself stretches for more than 4 miles, serving as a 60 foot wide buffer between the sand and the hotel properties that line it. At the northeast end of the boardwalk area is the Absecon Lighthouse. Then as you head south, you hit the Showboat Casino Hotel first, right at Garden Pier. The famous Trump Taj Mahal Casino is next going south, followed by the Resorts Casino Hotel. A gap of a few blocks brings you to the Sands and Bally's, then Caesars, and Trump Plaze Hotel right next to the Historic Boardwalk Hall. A little further down is the Tropicana Casino and finally the Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort.
