As one of the great cities in Asia, a trip to Bangkok, Thailand is almost assured of being an unforgettable experience. As Bangkok has grown, so has its traffic problems, but where else can you see an elephant strolling down the city streets? Or monks? Or houses built on stilts by the river? You can see just about anything and everything in Bangkok. With a mixture of ancient temples and modern highrises, even a few nights out on business travel can leave you speechless, but of course a tourist vacation is much more rewarding since you will have more time to see the sights. Any time of year that you visit Bangkok, be ready for steamy, humid weather -- overcast, muggy weather is the norm here, with temps in the 90s common. Which means, of course, lots of sweat if you plan on doing a lot of walking. November through March is the best time to visit Bangkok -- officially the "dry" season, but still hot. You can find Bangkok tourist and vacation info in some of our other travel guides -- this one is dedicated to finding a place to stay in Bangkok. Choices abound in this sprawling city, with plenty of places to choose from, especially in the Bangrak District, both along the riverside and around the Silom, Surawong, and Sathorn Road area. You can find plenty of low cost lodging options as well in this big city if you don't mind sharing bathroom space and, in some instances, rooms as well.
Make sure you get out and see some of the sights in Bangkok, like the Wat Phra Kaew Temple and the Grand Palace with golden spires dating back to the 18th century. Or the Wat Pho, home of the giant reclining Buddha (over 120 feet long!). Or the National Museum of Bangkok - there are free tours available, in English, every Wed. and Thursday, and they last about 2 hours.
Most Popular Bangkok Hotels
For a top of the line stay, try the The Oriental Hotel, where a room will set you back about $400 a night. Or go even a notch higher and stay at The Peninsula, arguably the finest hotel in Bangkok. On the other end of the spectrum are the ultra cheap guesthouses, where backpackers and other budget-oriented youth can get by for about $1-$5 per night for a dorm style bed in a common room. You can find some listings for budget Bangkok lodging here. You'll find quite a few hotels here with rooms costing just $30-$40 per night, like the Woraburi Sukhumvit Hotel or the Mandarin Bangkok Hotel. Rooms here may not be huge, service may be limited, but truth is you can find plenty of deals when it comes to booking a room. Below are some of the more popular, and more expensive, tourist hotels around Bangkok.
